Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDear KC Chiefs fans, at least those in the stands today, please take your tomahawk chop ...
and shove it right up your asses.
Then watch another team proceed to the Super Bowl.
You know it's offensive, but by God, you have your freedumb, so you did it en masse!
Now you have an entire off season to think it over.

Fighting Irish is a stereotype.
Cal State Long Beach change mascot from 49ers to nothing due to cultural sensitivity.
Rams cheerleaders are the Embraceable Ewes.
There are much better solutions to ending racism is sports and the general population.

(21,797 posts)regarding integration of African Americans, but not the issues of Native Americans.
Perhaps you don't realize that opposing the stereotypes about African Americans was, and still is, part of anti racism that can save lives and bring dignity to people's lives.
Stereotypes of dangerous, violent Blacks allow cops to see them that way and shoot them.
Stereotypes of Native Americans as wild savages enables people to dehumanize them, and to see Native women as fair game for rapes and murders which go uninvestigated because it was "only an Indian."
The way people are portrayed is the way they are perceived. The way they are perceived is the way they are treated. And sometimes that is a life and death issue.

(424 posts)Read this thread, there are multiple comments about Burrows being from LSU. He won a National Championship with them.
The head coach of that team, stone cold fucking racist. A complete fucking asshole. Now they did fire him, but his downfall was taking the team to meet Trump and he and the white lineman were whooping it up with the Mango Mussolini. The black players were shocked. Google it, look at the pictures. At that point the team was toast, obvious to the reason why.
Doesn't stop those who went to that school from being elated about the victory. Because that name on the Hoodie/Jersey when they win is bigger than almost anything else.
Nothing against any posters proud of the school, it is a sense of belonging and pride. Talk to Penn State grads, many liberal ones will defend Joe Paterno, because he won.
Changes in sports need to come with on field result, not from the stands. Make them losers, they change, call them losers they dig in.
See, I was able to do that without any personal attacks.

(21,797 posts)I am very much aware of how people cling to their sports heroes and to loyalties to team names and mascots.
A few years ago, there was a huge, ugly verbal battle in the Buffalo suburb of Lancaster, not far from me, because of its high school sports team name. There are high schools who play against that team, that have Native American students from a nearby Seneca territory. Teams began to refuse to play the Lancaster team because of its offensive sports title.
Seneca leaders proposed a meeting for people to discuss the issue, calmly, and come to solutions together. Instead of calm discussions, parents of Lancaster students showed up with angry signs, shouts, and crude epithets at the Seneca. Some dressed as Chief Wahoo. Seneca leaders expressed disappointment at the inability to have a rational discussion.
Eventually, the school superintendant announced that the team name would be retired. The school had a contest among students to come up with an alternative name. When the new name was announced, it was parents more than students who proclaimed loudly in street demonstrations the old name followed by the word "forever."
Not very far from Lancaster, there is another high school in western NY whose sports teams are all called "Red Raiders." They no longer do the offensive dance at half time by a white student dressed as Chief Wahoo in face paint and feathers waving a tomahawk. But the Wahoo image is still available on t-shirts and sports pennants.
People who would never dream of using names offensive to African Americans, Jews, or other ethnicities/races see absolutely nothing wrong with promoting dehumanizing Native American images.
They cling strongly to their alma mater sports team names and mascots out of pride and adolescent memories. They do not see the problem unless it is bluntly spoken to them.
They are schools with little to no connection to Native societies, so why do they adopt a name that has nothing to do with them in the first place? My high school sports teams were named for a local Civil War hero (Union) that the school was named after. That makes sense.
It is an issue worth taking a stand on. People will resist no matter what is said or how. Too bad. People were offended when the Little Black Sambo storybook was removed from schools, too.
Diablo del sol
(424 posts)That being said, sports bring out the best and worst in people.
Laguna Hills High School was in the news this week. Mascot is the Hawks. Not far from where I live, in same school district. Honestly never knew they had an issue at the school. And they are usually bad in football/basketball/baseball. Highly regarded academically. Turns out the assistant basketball coach has a history of being a jerk. Nothing ever done, in his case, he needs to be fired this week. And I expect that to happen. Enough thoughtful parents from all races that won't want their kid associated with a "racist" school.

(1,184 posts)The word "Fighting" is used in lots of college teams' mascots. If it were the "Drunken Irish," I could see the offense. Otherwise, there's not a comparison between that and the Tomahawk Chop.
You asked if you are supposed to be offended by Fighting Irish. That's immaterial to the fact that many Native Americans have long found the Tomahawk Chop offensive and protested against it.
Diablo del sol
(424 posts)Not a Notre Dame fan, has nothing to do with the name. Fighting Turks OK? Fighting Muslims?
70+% of male sports fans could not give two turds about the chop.
Want to stop it, cancel your State Farm policy and tell them it is because they use Mahomes, add in, Rogers is a complete douche. Enough people get together and impact the bottom line, things will change. SF drops Mahomes and his next negotiations he can push the change or jump to another team where he can make more money on endorsements.
And I assume the Spotify account has been cancelled.
As for College Football, one of the biggest revenue generators, players have unprecedented ability to impact change with the NIL ruling. Hit up athletes signing with Florida State, a 10% penalty in NIL agreement for making that choice is going to have a HUGE impact on a kid who might be making his first 50 or 100k. FSU loses one or two Five Stars, that chant/chop will be gone by the beginning of the next season.

(25,657 posts)Of course, the Cowboys are singularly responsible for the NFL becoming the largest and richest form of entertainment in the United States, bar none. Nothing comes close, and I remember when the only pro football games on TV here in Philly were away games that the Eagles played with maybe a 10 minute post game show and the fact that you could get decent seats at Franklin Field on the day of the game with no problem. College football reigned supreme in those days.
Traildogbob
(8,900 posts)Pre Jerry. His ego is the problem. I always imagine how many, if Jimmy Johnson would have not been fired. Damn hard to keep being a fan. Just a bit loyal to what they were before Jones. Many more Jerry World stadiums popping up, at tax payer expense. TV and fans have contributed to the costs. Look at just the value of Jerseys in the stands. Ticket costs, parking, and $6+ for watered down beer. We feed the monster. Dak made $75 million last year. FFS. Sick. Soldiers and educators living month to month. Wait until paying college players kicks in. Look at the transfers already. Dolla, dolla, dolla, all about the Dolla. Soccer outside US fares pretty well too. Maybe I can pull for my states team, Panthers, when the stink of Cam subsides. Trump in the Box with Jones last year about pushed me over. I just love the game, I played, won awards and have my glory days. Was kind of funny seeing middle age fat men in number 15 jerseys at Chiefs yesterday. Seriously, they relate to his talent????😂😂 and watching a fat ole fan after a beast of a man knocks a QB on his ass, the fan screaming in rabid fashion to opposing fans or players like, I just knocked your ass out. Ole well, guess its a brief escape from the falling of our democracy. Glad no red teams are in the super bowl. Those shots of fans in the stadium, furiously screaming, all in red is too much like a trump Jamboree. Stop throwing batteries at Cowboys, and snowballs at Santa🤨 and cheering when a wide receiver may be paralyzed laying motionless on the field. What did Irving ever do to ya, except break your heart. Have a good Super Bowl fellow football fan. Watch from home, drink good beer reasonably priced food and avoid covid spittle.

(3,636 posts)KC hasn't gotten the memo yet that they are on the wrong side of history. It's a realistic assessment that a lot of fans will get pissed if the team capitulates and ditches the offensive but traditional name. It requires an owner and management team that are willing to take that hit in the short term.

(43 posts)Buck ONeil and Jackie Robinson were part of the Monarchs.
I don't find the names Chiefs or Braves offensive because they are aspirational. If you substituted the European equivalents, they would be Kings or Knights. The Irish equivalent would be Chieftain.
Everyone would like to be a Chief, King, Brave, Knight, Monarch, Chieftain etc., each represent brave and fearless leaders.
Redskin was a whole other thing, because it is denigrating.
Fighting Irish is a different category, because Irish Americans took hold of the denigrating stereotype, made it our own and flaunted it. Nobody could use it against us. We owned it.
I think the chop is silly but not the only silly thing in sports. The Chiefs Have involved the local Native American communities and gotten their input in a lot of things, getting rid if the face paint and headdresses and the horse.

In the 90s a lot of people tolerated a lot of crap.

(19,205 posts)with the chop. Same thing with the NCAA's Florida State Seminoles.
Some Hollywood composer comes up with what he thought was appropriate "Indian" music for a movie in the 1950s, and 70+ years later it's still used when "cheering on" a racially insensitive football team?
I turn the volume off when they start that insipid chant, but I can't turn the TV off and still watch the game.

(8,900 posts)That dam chop and chant sickens me. I really dispise FSU, only watched KC since MaHoneBoy got there, just because he is so good. Those rabid fans looked too much like trumpers, and I now hate red because of trump. Gotta be some covid spewing going on. Great comeback, was hoping Bengals won the OT toss and stole it without KC touching the ball. A really stupid OT rule. But Cinn had a big uphill climb, and did it. Good for em.
SergeStorms
(19,205 posts)At least we won't be subjected to Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers this year. Even Mahomes is getting old, although he's exciting to watch.
My Super Bowl was last weekend with the Bills and Chiefs. One helluva game, but Buffalo lost the toss and never got to handle the ball. Their defense was totally gassed, and Mahomes picked them apart.
I think they have to revisit that overtime process. The referee announces, "we're starting a brand new game here". No, you aren't. In what NFL game does only one team get to play offense? Its not sour grapes, I've thought this since they established it.
I guess I'll have to pull for Cinci to win, pulling for the underdog and all. I liked Burrows at LSU, and he's not having any trouble translating his talents to the Pro game.
Traildogbob
(8,900 posts)Do wish Burrows would drop the cigar thing though. Comes off as arrogant, but he has been backed it up. So much young QB talent in the league.
