They had a thriving store in the heart of downtown surrounded by locally-owned eateries. It was around the corner from the concert hall and Id stop in to get a drink before the show. Place was always packed. It supposedly did brisk business during weekdays, too. This fall, it suddenly closed like, in a week.
The reason Starbucks corporate gave was the last straw for me. Instead of being honest (or at least less duplicitous) about the real reason unionization it blamed an unsafe environment downtown due to homelessness and crime, and expressed concern for employees safety. Basically, it slandered an entire city core to cover up the real reason why this store was closing. The excuse fell flat quick, though, when the other businesses around the store said they had NO particular issues with homeless and/or crime, and the police said they had NO requests to increase check-in visits,, which the police routinely offer to downtown businesses.
There is already a perception of a violent downtown, especially since COVID and riots over George Floyd. Thats largely bullshit, but it feeds the perception of those outside of downtown, and fuck Starbucks for cynically using that as an excuse for not letting its baristas unionize.
(BTW
if I want shitty, burnt coffee, I can make it myself, no problem.)
