I have the captions on, watching the greeting of Macron and his wife to the White House. When Macron speaks in French, the captions read, Speaking non-english.
Really? Even the captions are MAGA!

"Speaking in ...........
Or
"Speaking in non English" when likely 90+% of those lip reading do so for English.
In France I would expect the caption to be "Ne parle pas Français"

(49,060 posts)I think the captioners are not hired on their ability to tell one European language from another, though many could.
Further, the captioning service may have a policy to label ALL non-English as non-English. It would probably be the best policy, to avoid mistakes or embarrassing mistakes. To untutored ears, Ukrainian sounds rather like Russian. Imagine the hoo-hah that would ensue if they labelled a Ukrainian speaker as "Russian language" instead of "Ukrainian language" or "non-English".
I would have to look up Macron's language capabilities, but I not that interested at the moment.

I only watch Nicolle Wallace on cable and I listened to her yesterday using the word homeland over and over again. It pisses me off. It must revert back to her Bush days when W and Cheney started pushing the use of homeland. Is it so hard to say America or the United States instead of homeland?
Pretty soon the use of homeland will be replaced by Fatherland.
People now think a fence is a wall.

(10,749 posts)A tv show in French or German or whatever with English subtitles. Then theres a character who speaks in Dutch, and the caption reads, foreign language or done thing like that. I think its because captions are generated automatically and are programmed for one spoken language and one captioned language. A thing else returns an error message. Not political. Just cheap, lazy, and just dont give a crap.
