The price of potatoes seems to be going down. I got a 10 lb bag of russets for $2.98, last week. This week they are in the $4 range, but that's still cheaper than they were a few weeks ago.
However, frozen French Fries and hash browns have gone from around $1.79 to $3.00 for a 30 oz bag. I can buy a 5 lb bag of potatoes for less than that. And don't get me started on the price of eggs! Over $3 for a dozen. Of course that's likely due to the bird flu.
So I'm just going to make my own hash browns, from now on. Might still splurge on the fries. Definitely will splurge but also cut back on the eggs.
I'm in Michigan so I have no idea if this is happening everywhere.

(2,533 posts)Last year it was $3.29. Two weeks ago it was $4.89
Yesterday it was $5.29
Same with almost every item. They ARE trying to kill us.

(10,749 posts)Organic milk half gallon is $5 plus
Local dairies prices shout 40% less
Eggs from $4 up to more than $6 for organic.
Cereals are $4 on up. Organic chicken is $4 and up per pound.
Fish prices are higher, with scallops and halibut in the obscene price levels.
I like bison, and 1 lb ground is now $11.99, almost double over the past year.
Ice cream, which I dont buy often, is also in the obscene category, with some pint prices at $8. Cheaper is available.
These are local co-op prices. Grocery store prices are lower, and store brand and generic meats and poultry are pretty reasonable.
Apples are much higher in both stores.

(32,849 posts)Anything that has a lower price now, well it's only temporary because of a bumper crop and they have to move them. I know the next time I buy the same item, the price will be back to where it was, or even higher. Also I've seen a lot of "grocery shrink ray" meaning less in the package but charging the same price. It's scary for those of us on a fixed income!

(10,088 posts)Very costly compared to recent years. Those same items however, when on sale, can be had for pretty much the same price as recent years. Items like condiments, chips, cookies, and crackers, etc. that I will now never buy if not on sale.

(26,314 posts)The weird thing is that hash browns are more expensive than the same size bag of fries or tater tots. They used to be priced the same.

(6,490 posts)When the price of oil goes up, the price of gas manufactured at the old price still goes up within milliseconds. When the price of oil goes down, the price of gas comes down months later or after the next election.

(23,309 posts)need something when they jack the price up 40%, don't buy it. I've been going to a local Farmer's Market and buying select items that are cheaper and fresher. They don't sit in a Kroger warehouse for a week before getting to the shelf.

(26,314 posts)Right now I'm collecting 'ingredients' for the pantry so that I can well stocked for Winter. The forecast is for heavier than average snowfall.
I prefer to cook from scratch, anyway. It's cheaper and healthier. Right now I'm making a big pot of beef, vegetable and barley soup from a pot roast kit That I found at 50% off. So a little over $5 and I'll be enjoying some lovely soup and have some to share should someone stop by.
