He is so delusional. He really does seem to think he's controlling what will become the main source of news and communications. All he's doing is increasing the noise on Twitter.

One nothingburger "story" and suddenly Musk has outdone all the media in the world.
It's like they're all using drugs.

(2,910 posts)has made lots of 4-20 jokes (he paid fifty 4-20 per share for the bird), and appeared in a vid of him supposedly smoking a joint, so drugs could well be involved.

(1,300 posts)He'd know that there was little "signal" as a rule there before and he is in the process of killing what's left, leaving only "noise."
Bye, bye twitter.

(7,287 posts)Twitter can be great for breaking news, but that's not least because so many MSM journalists are on it, so Twitter can hardly make conventional news irrelevant unless they all decide to keep tweeting news stories as a hobby if they lose their jobs.
The only other sources that can be useful for news are those actually on the ground in an area or during an event or those with specialist knowledge, and special care is obviously needed in checking them out for veracity if they're unfamilar accounts.
I'm OK with taking control of my own signal-to-noise ratio and muting or blocking the accounts I find to be useless as quickly as he adds them back (his included). I've been doing that since I started using Twitter seriously. The problem is with hashtags and search results, as they're always cluttered with nonsense among the sense and always get latched onto by accounts hijacking the search terms or hashtags to try to sell or spread unrelated whatevers - now tell me about noise, Musky. The various types of selected trending topics are mostly useless as their choice is often plain weird, and depending on the search term, can bring up unrelated jabber, usually along with a few dashes of porn. If Musk's already relying on them to keep himself informed, that explains a lot!
I can't see any changes he's proposed improving that, and doing so would probably require some form of *gasp* censorship on a grand scale anyway. It would certainly require some sort of editorial control, in which case Musk would need to reinvent the wheel yet again and his whole argument for "replacing" conventional news would evaporate.
Maybe he really does believe that all opinions and tweets are of equal value. He's loopy enough in other ways to make that plausible. Or maybe this is just another of the gazillion aspects he hasn't thought through because he surrounds himself with yes men and nobody within his staff dares challenge him.

(26,404 posts)Improving signal to noise would definitely help.
Onboarding racists, however, is increasing the noise for actual - factual news. I think Elmo is moving in the opposite direction

(4,021 posts)I would prefer you would have read the tweet, and not carelessly accuse him of saying something he clearly did not say.
That said, I kind of share the sentiment you seem to be expressing.
Q: Does anyone here think that conventional news has become, and continues to become, less relevant? Elon's help is not required.
The more I think about it, he does not need to do much to be "right" regarding his assertion as to the relevancy of "conventional news".
