(3,415 posts)Just a couple of weeks after the first entry of American troops into WWII, November 8-9, 1942. That was the Operation Torch landings in N. Africa, and my father was among them as part of the 1st Armored Division. President Biden was just a kid when these brave men and women helped save the world from Hitler.

(33,048 posts)During World War II, approximately 350,000 U.S. women served with the armed forces. As many as 543 died in war-related incidents, including 16 from enemy fire - even though U.S. political and military leaders had decided not to use women in combat because they feared public opinion.

(34,139 posts)She had signed up directly after completing nursing school, in 1940. She did her training in Virginia Beach, was among the first group of nurses to work at the brand new Navy hospital at Rancho Santa Margerita, later known as Camp Pendleton, then was transferred out to Hawaii where she treated men from Guadalcanal and other Pacific battles. After the war ended, she was still treating service men who were headed home - that's when she met my father who was a submarine officer, waiting to be mustered out.
When Mom died in 2018, the Navy sent an all female honor guard for her funeral.

(307 posts)character and personality between #46 and #45 (in reality #2, if you know what I mean) stand out in stark clarity. Thanks for posting this!
That choked me up. Joe Biden is just the kindest, most sincere human being. I am so proud that HE is my President.

(448 posts)98 years old and just as sharp as he ever has been. He just stopped flying with me this year in our airplane. What an amazing man he is. Oh, and he and his wife just had their 75th wedding anniversary. Here's to Retired Col. Hal Gibson.

(16,620 posts)I liked him, always did, but he was not my first choice. I thought he could have made a good president at one time, but it was too late, he was just too old. I WAS AN IDIOT!
After the SC primary, I threw him all my support. I figured Jim Clyburn and all those black voters in SC must know something I didn't, and I hopped on the bandwagon and did not look back. He still wasn't my personal favorite, but I felt like he was the right one, regardless. I supported him wholeheartedly from then on and rejoiced when he win.
Then things really got interesting, as he proceeded to greatly exceed my expectations, time and time again. He's still doing that, just about every single day, and I think he's the greatest president in my lifetime and one of the greatest ever.
I have never been so happy to be proven 100% dead ass wrong!

(24,102 posts)Maybe we've met and we don't even know it.
A friend of ours, Lyn Campbell, was just elected to the McHenry county board. She was appointed to fill a vacancy, and then won outright on her own. She was the only Democrat running, along with 2 republicans, and she got the most votes so she gets a 4 year term, and the other guy has to run again in 2 years.

Before covid, I used to attend those meetings regularly. Then there was the shutdown and everything was on Zoom for quite a while, and I never managed to make that transition. Earlier this year, I went a couple of times but haven't gotten back in the habit of going consistently. I need to get back to it!
Looks like we are in different county board districts. I'm in district 2. My new Democratic county board member is Gloria Van Hof. This county has come a long way since my husband and I moved here in 1994. It was blindingly red back then--much better now!
