1. "FTX's Bankman-Fried donated about $40M this political cycle. Here's who benefited." (WAPO)

Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, was a prolific political donor, pumping about $40 million this cycle alone into campaign committees and other groups, mostly aligned with Democrats, federal records show.

His contributions are under scrutiny as federal prosecutors on Tuesday alleged that Bankman-Fried had broken campaign finance laws by sourcing donations from his related crypto hedge fund, Alameda Research, and falsely reporting them as originating from other people.

His largesse to Democratic causes was surpassed over the past two years only by that of George Soros, the liberal financier. Bankman-Fried has claimed that he gave just as much to GOP causes, but through nonprofit groups not required to disclose their donors. Much of the money Bankman-Fried gave went to super PACs. These groups, which can accept unlimited individual and corporate contributions, must remain formally separate from campaigns as they run ads or sponsor other communications supporting or opposing candidates.

7. "FTX billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried funneled dark money to Republicans" (Guardian)

Dec 2022
The fall of crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried has been painted as a big blow to the Democratic party, whose candidates were major beneficiaries of his largesse. But in a new interview, Bankman-Fried has claimed he gave equally large amounts of money to Republicans.

“I donated to both parties. I donated about the same amount to both parties,” Bankman-Fried told the crypto commentator and citizen journalist Tiffany Fong.

“All my Republican donations were dark,” he said, referring to political donations that are not publicly disclosed...

Bankman-Fried’s undisclosed donations were made possible by the supreme court’s 2010 decision in the Citizens United case, which made it easier for donors to give large amounts of money anonymously and has led to more than $1bn being poured into federal elections since 2010.

FTX billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried funneled dark money to Republicans

The crypto entrepreneur was thought to be a big donor to Democrats but now acknowledges he gave equally to GOP

6. According to Bloomberg News top FTX execs sent $3.5 million for the GOP's Senate Leadership Fund

in addition to 6 million to a super political action committee for House Democrats, and $3 million for a fund that backs Senate Democrats.

Bankman-Fried is facing additional scrutiny for recently saying he gave equally to Republicans and Democrats, but funded conservatives through “dark money” groups that don’t identify donors. The claim is almost impossible to verify unless the recipients voluntarily disclose they received money from him.
What’s clear from public records is that donors tied to FTX gave to Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Kevin McCarthy, the top Republicans in the House and Senate.

He also gave to Hakeem Jeffries and O’Rourke so plenty of trouble all around.
