Polar air and a powerful winter storm put millions under winter alerts this holiday week

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/20/weather/christmas-artic-winter-storm-tuesday/index.html

CNN

For millions of Americans across a large swath of the country, the holiday week is beginning with unrelenting below-freezing temperatures made even more miserable by heavy snow expected Tuesday and Wednesday in several central and northwestern states.

Meanwhile, even southern cities unaccustomed to wintry conditions will get a brittle taste of it this holiday season, with Austin, Houston, Atlanta, and even Orlando at risk of seeing temperatures below freezing beginning midweek.

More at link. If you're traveling for Christmas, do it sooner, if possible! Stay safe all.

Happy Holidays!

When I saw another post & RandySF was unaware of this system, I felt it a good idea to find article & post.

Huge ice storm here Thurs with heavy rain, near zero temp overnight & below freezing Fri. & Sat. with high winds.

Last year's ice storm broke over 100 water mains in Memphis because nothing here is built for deep freeze. Here we go again...

I hope everyone stays safe. If you're traveling, do it now rather than later!

Roads constantly breaking expensive car parts & the highest vioent crime rate in the entire country are the 2 main reasons! Climate is a big #3 for me. Super hot & muggy in summer & very cold with near 100% humidity in winter.

All in all, it's like living in hell.

I only leave my home to go to grocery store or vet (with N95 firmly in place!).

The covidiots / rednecks are another factor, but staying home all the time insulates me from them.

for all of western NY, which covers several counties.

It will begin with freezing rain on Friday, followed by heavy snowfall, plummeting temperatures, and high winds with gusts at 60 mph. Blizzard conditions predicted for some parts of the area over the Christmas weekend.

Sounds like the same storm system as currently in the West and Midwest for this week, just arriving a little later here.

I will stock up, have candles, blankets, and battery radio ready.

Then sub freezing for 2-3 days. Nothing here is built for this type of cold. Fortunately, my home is very well insulated & ductless hvac is excellent!

Last year over 100 water mains broke in Mempis due to sub freezing temps. 😓

During the winter, I use those door thingies for blocking air drafts, but I put them on my windowsills to block drafts there. I have a space heater to use if the high winds cause too much of a draft, but that won't help if the ice storm, heavy snow, and winds cause power outages.

But, I also have warm sweat pants and sweatshirts, quilts, and my furry feline for warmth. I'll be ok. It's the homeless people at times like this that I worry about.

It's the daytime that is a problem for them. There is no place to go in the daytime unless they hang out in stores or libraries. Homeless shelters for bad weather are only available for overnight.

My smal city does not have any designated shelter for bad weather that I'm aware of. The secretary at my church opens the church up in the day time during heat waves in summer. I just e-mailed her to ask about plans for this upcoming blizzard.

Not just on the ground, but in the air, with whiteouts and blizzard conditions.

I live in a multi story apartment building, one floor below the top level. When it snows like this, all I can see is white everywhere, completely surrounded by it and sometimes not able to see the ground below. Gets a bit disorienting.

I lived in Little Falls NY for 12 years.. it's at the base of the Adirondacks.. and have ridden in a Whiteout(we landed in a ditch!) with my sister who still has a home in the Adirondacks.

I grew up in Colorado.. so had lots of fun playing in the snow from skiing to snow shoes..

the regional office of the US Weather Service sounds nearly identical to the Ohio Blizzard of 1978, which I remember as the worst storm of my life. I lived in a Cleveland suburb at the time.

That blizzard started out exactly like the predictions for this one - warm temps and rain the day before. Sudden, dramatic temp drop overnight and a flash freeze of all the water from the rain. The flash freeze encased my entire car in inch thick ice. Dry, powdery snow piled on top of the ice making it doubly treacherous. The winds exceeded predictions. There were a few gusts clocked at 110 mph.

I am hoping that this storm does not get that bad, even though it is predicted to begin in the same way.

It was my place and several of my neighbors. They replaced a circuit (?) in the box out front, used a long pole, and as soon as that thing was in place everything came back on. My house dropped 8 degrees during that time, not too bad. I have a place to go in an emergency but I'd rather not.

Hell, we're waiting for a substantial snow event and that isn't here yet and the power went out. I hope that's all that happens! It's nerve wracking.

snow. They haven't said the exact amount of snow amount, but wind gusts will be between 40-60mph. Temps below 0. Are you going via the PA Turnpike, if conditions are bad they will close it. I 90 is always terrible. Do NOT go that route. Be safe. We experienced a white out out on I-90 going from NYC to Pittsburgh. No place to pull over. I opened the window and gave my to be husband , directions for staying on the road. You might want to go on the road that cuts up to PennState. It is new and less likely to cause problems but it is still in the Mountains. I believe it is Route 332 or 322 Or 76.
. Check on a map. It will take you some what south . Also check with AAA. Be careful/ It also depends on the part of WV you are in. If is Wheeling you have no choice but to cut across PA. If Morgantown, You can cut across PA and then north. One las thing, stick to the Interstates and or turnpike, do not take the back roads, they are the last ones to get plowed and salted. PA local roads are well known to let the sun melts it.
