Face Recognition Tech Gets Girl Scout Mom Booted From Rockettes Show Due to Where She Works
A recent incident at Radio City Music Hall involving the mother of a Girl Scout is shedding light on the growing controversy of facial recognition, as critics claim it is being used to target perceived enemies in this case, by one of the most famous companies in the country.
A sign says facial recognition is used as a security measure to ensure safety for guests and employees. Conlon says she posed no threat, but the guards still kicked her out with the explanation that they knew she was an attorney.
"They knew my name before I told them. They knew the firm I was associated with before I told them. And they told me I was not allowed to be there," said Conlon.
Conlon is an associate with the New Jersey based law firm, Davis, Saperstein and Solomon, which for years has been involved in personal injury litigation against a restaurant venue now under the umbrella of MSG Entertainment.

(26,352 posts)I can see why a business wouldnt want opposing counsel on the premises.
They claim she was on notice. Was she? Its probably part of the response to the lawsuit(s) - something like at no time is any plaintiff, employee, or agent allowed on the premises without court approval
I guess she figured a truce is called because her daughter is a Scout?
I once worked in a business that was involved in a personal injury suit. A lawyer and an assistant pretended to be customers so they could gain access to take photographs of our offices - I guess I was more pissed off because they suckered me LOL. I put 2 and 2 together when they acted strange and then quickly snapped pictures of our back office (the guy took a shortcut though the office and walked through a plate glass window that should have been tempered glass and nearly cut his arm off)

(8,387 posts)Management didnt know who she was there with, and it had nothing to do with why management wanted her excluded from the property.
What seems odd to me is how did the system identify her as an associate of the firm. Something seems missing from this story and I cant put my finger on it.

(26,352 posts)Usually when you see these outrage stories in the media, there is either a plaintiffs attorney or an insurance company attorney pushing the story.
Im thinking this is pretty boilerplate stuff. You cant go on the property of a business you are suing. Seems logical to me. The attorney should know that.
Now add in a multimillion dollar security contract and some nifty tech meant to catch terrorists and you get regular people caught in the nets (brought to you by 9/11 - usually its just pot smokers at the airport)

(8,387 posts)One of the things to ask when you see a story like this is How did this get into the news?
Its not as if the venue put out a press release about how their security system spotted an excluded person. Someone is definitely wanting attention.
Casinos have had this sort of thing for ages to keep out card counters or people who have identified themselves as compulsive gamblers. Obviously, we have to explore issues around new and intrusive technologies.
