Equation of time trumps solstice in determining sunrise/sunsets. Sunrise/sunset's centered on solar noon, but the sun follows the equation of time as to when solar noon is. All hail the sacred analemma.
Solstice determines day length, not solar noon.

(35,432 posts)5. I read the earliest sunset of the year at this latitude 40th was a week or so ago.
I think it said the latest sunrise will be around January 7th. But this was still the shortest day.
