We even talked about using drone drops to get the baby some Enfamil, because the baby was starving, she said.
But Mother Nature wasnt done yet.
If being trapped by formidable walls of ice and snow wasnt enough, subzero temperatures, brought down by an Arctic front, took an already struggling region by the neck. Temperatures dropped into the negative teens and 20s this week, and the unkind Midwest wind shredded those figures with wind chills in the negative 40s and negative 50s.

(102,512 posts)in South Dakota, please google and educate yourselves. Even in "normal" times, this is one of the most outrageously impoverished and challenged communities in the country and anti-Native bigotry in SD knows few bounds.
I hate feeling helpless to do anything for them. The National Guard should have been called out at the early approach of this storm. But, Kristi Noem, like all the RW governors before her, just doesn't give a damn about Native Americans, nor much of her state, quite frankly.

(86,924 posts)In that state are extremely racist, they want the residents of the reservations to just die. This is a travesty and needs immediate attention.

(10,435 posts)lived there almost two years and the worst thing that shocked me was the anti-native bigotry. I'd come from a rural area and was surrounded by the usual redneck anti-black etc , but even that was mild compared to what native americans face in the Dakotas. It was completely unexpected, and intense. It's really sad that it apparently hasn't changed.

(32,136 posts)Native reservations are under federal authority and courts have found the federal government "has a duty to protect" the tribes.

(102,512 posts)with rescue, just as state and Federal authorities can be admitted to help with infectious disease control or other health interventions/emergencies on the reservations. A sovereign nation designation does NOT preclude accepting help as has been the case for many decades. I know firsthand from my own past participation with other tribes. To suggest it is the tribe's "fault" for not inviting in the help is just absolute bullshit and offensive as hell. It clearly has not been offered.

(32,136 posts)Since according to the law it is their responsibility.

(102,512 posts)Your insinuations and assumptions that the tribe has refused help for which there is zero evidence of it being offered (and for which you present no evidence to the contrary) are beyond disgusting... worst than that, it seems a pattern with you. I won't accuse you of racist bigotry but will instead give you benefit-of-the doubt, only suggesting you learn about working with the tribes--something I have done in my career-- and maybe read some history to develop some understanding and empathy. Anti-Native racism is generational in South Dakota and has become all but governmental policy in its past decades of state administrations.

(32,136 posts)Which is offensive as hell. I said nothing about the tribe asking or not asking for help. The poster I was replying to said the National Guard should have been called out and its their responsibility. It is not. It is the responsibility of the federal government. Which you have ignored in your series of insults and falsehoods towards me.

(11,411 posts)I was really afraid of this. First thing I thought of when I here about the massive storm, and horrific wind chills. These are among the most rural (and I'm talking deep rural), and already vulnerable people left in the U.S. Life was pretty bleak and rough - before the storm came through ...
