In most of my extended family, any attempt at such would lead to household mutiny.

(751 posts)People have to spend Christmas doing (or not doing) things your family does (or doesnt)?

(751 posts)Gee, I suddenly decided not going to watch any NFL or NBA games since your family doesnt.

(65,319 posts)...have been scheduled since the league began 75 years ago.
It's generally been the highest ratings day for the NBA regular season for a few decades.
If it weren't popular, they would have quit doing it.
Somebody's watching, mutiny free.

(65,319 posts)Do we tell the NFL no more games if Christmas falls on a Sunday?
Good one, Joe! Merry Christmas.

(751 posts)The NFL has time to think about whether its worth to have games on Christmas in eleven years because one extended family doesnt watch sports on Christmas.
Merry NFL and NBA Marathon Day!

(32,130 posts)When we would visit my husbands family you would get tossed out in the snow if you interfered with their sports watching on a holiday. If there was a really big game on, his aunt had to serve the meal at half time.

(32,841 posts)And even those who are and do, may not be living near their extended families in order to celebrate.
Many of us live far away from the people and places where we grew up. Some of us must work (or volunteer or serve) on the Christmas weekend while others get to relax and celebrate.
Long story short, we aren't living inside a Christmas movie, as much as the Hallmark channel would like us to think so.
When the networks show these types of sports specials, they know they'll capture at least some Americans' attention. I don't have a problem with it.

(42,799 posts)You seem to be upset that in some (not necessarily all) families everyone is "expected" to spend Christmas Day watching certain sports events. To which my reaction is so what?
In some families everyone is expected to spend the day watching Its A Wonderful Life, Christmas Story, Live Actually etc. in some families everyone is expected to go to church. And in some families no one is expected to do one thing or another.
So what?
And if I may ask what, if anything, are members of your family expected to do on Christmas Day?

(32,099 posts)They're running a marathon, too. But, it's all episodes of their travel and cooking shows, with a Christmas/holidays theme.
And, to be honest, if there was an NHL or other hockey marathon on, I would be watching. That won't happen because the NHL schedules no games the 24th-26th.
