coming to his house on the 26th with cries of "Christmas gift! Christmas gift!" These were southern ladies, and I think their cries are related to Boxing Day.
On Boxing Day in England, wealthy families gave boxes of gifts and money to the servants. I suspect that on the same day, the tradition carried over, and Southerners gave similar gifts to servants, enslaved or free, and these ladies were trying to be funny, mocking the lower class demand for their traditional gifts.
