"SNIP........

Politico: “The new federal rules, executive orders and pending legislation aimed at China’s high-tech sectors, which began this fall and will continue in 2023, are the culmination of years of debate spanning three administrations.”

“Taken together, they represent an escalation of former President Donald Trump’s tariffs and trade disputes against Beijing that could ultimately do more to slow Chinese technological and economic development — and divide the two economies — than anything the 45th president did while in office.”

But if you’re going to do it go big and claim you did more than the republicans. They hate to be in the wrong side of being weak.

I wish it weren't so but that's the way it's turning out. We're fully tethered together in many ways but spinning faster and faster away from our central connection.......trade.

They'll find ways to get what we seek to hold back.....but no point in making it easy for them. We need to form stronger ties with their regional opponents and India.

Realpolitik.

With the heavy tariffs on foodstuffs such as soy and wheat, we turned China from a trading partner to an enemy, who had to turn to Russia to feed their huge population.

And where would Putin go for all this extra grain, but the breadbasket of Europe?

We should have restored the pre-Trump agricultural trade policies with China instead of driving them into Putin's arms. And saved US farmers from relying on govt handouts/subsidies.

I was in China , more than a few times, from 92 through 2016, I remember when Chinese folks would approach me at Panyo's bar in Zhongshan to practice conversational English with me, They thought Bill Clinton was a rockstar.

The hope for the future was there.....the Party pendulum has swung the other way today and it now views the world as its enemy....because that's what authoritarians do. So sad for the many people who I still regard as friends there.

...decided it wasn't worth the effort.

The Cold War "was" over, but certain old thinking and conservatives managed to bring it back. We have fucked ourselves.
