General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe RW is going berserk over the fact that THIS vote was a vote of approval for Obama's work.
Last time they could pull out that smarmy, self satisfied, "Well, we elected the black man aren't we a post-racial country" crap and secretly wish for his failure. Now, four years and an insane amount of obstructionism later, America has said NO to their bullshit. And they are enraged.
But we are strong. We stood together an we stood behind this good man, this great president and rejected their racism, their sexism, their smug superiority. We know who we are and we are America.
And they can kiss my strong, lefty, gay-lovin', choice defending, Obama adoring, contraception promoting, healthcare providing, womanly, idiot rejecting ASS.
LONG may we wave.

(10,281 posts)that they have to face that fact is what bothers them.
they simply cant deal with it... especially the older white folks who have seen the changes in their lifetime. They want their "good ole [white] America" back.. but it aint gonna happen.

(2,158 posts)as much as I see it as the failure of a hostile takeover. Face it, all the GOP wants to do when they get into office is to make money, and give privileges to their rich friends. The GOP hasn't cared about America since Eisenhower. They failed, utterly, and see plainly their grip on power lost. But their are not above using race to divide and conquer, so let them be hoisted by their own petard
this "older white folk" doesn't want that old America back. I'm very happy to see this country making strides to move forward; for my son and my grandson! There are many more like me than you realize. This is something I see frequently on DU. Please don't categorize us.
Im an "older white folk" too. Of course I meant older Republican white folk. Sorry for the misunderstanding..

(2,795 posts)Thankfully Americans realized that if GW Bush got a second term, Obama certainly deserved a second term after accomplishing so much against such difficult odds. Voting WAS the best revenge against those naysayers who strived from day one to deny him any accomplishments and blame him for all the problems he inherited. I just wish we had defeated more Repubs who rooted for bad news and failed to cooperate in any way to improve our lives.

(14,180 posts)Only it was about the first term of Obama.
If they truly thought he was so much on the wrong path....the logic should have been give him some rope and watch him hang himself, and that would have assured them of snuffing out a second term for him and they would be celebrating today.
But we all know that deep down they KNEW that he was proposing ideas that would help the economy, like stimulus and jobs bills.

(87 posts)Almost took the day off so I could sit at home and watch Fox news all day long. Thank you America! You just avoided another great depression. And a war with Iran. Thank you America for showing your true colors last night. It is time they know this is the country we WANT to be and in their own words: "Love it or leave it" we should give them five states so they can form Christianastan and live under fundamentalist rule. Where women stay home, barefoot, pregnant and without education. Where education consists of reading the bible and nothing else. Where women who rape easy are forced to deliver the spawn of their attacker. Where there are five rich people and everyone else is destitute. I'm sick of these people and their need to shackle me with their belief systems.

(978 posts)At least watched it for as long as I could in the morning.
It was pretty boring. But it felt like they were in a state of shock and were only able to repeat the results of races around the country.
Alot of focus was on Florida and how Obama was able to take advantage of the Republican primaries to spend time to reestablish his base for the same regions he did well in 2008. They were saying that's why the race was so tight. Which I thought was interesting. My memory is short and I may have heard that on CNN. But I think it was Fox.
I never kept it on long enough to see Hannity, O'Reilly and the Five.
It seemed like most of the excitement was Election Night when Fox appeared to be stunned by the 11:00 pm? announcement that Obama won and then Karl Rove started flipping out.
Basic math prevailed in this election. The Republicans ignored it.

(2,354 posts)Given that, it is nothing short of amazing. And anyone who would deny a second term to a man capable of those accomplishments in the face of determined opposition is not doing it for a good reason.
Damn square it was a vote of approval. And damn square that if RW terrorists can't come to the table to work WITH everyone else in America, then let them stay home or in their exclusive communities and figure out why they are the unpopular kids in the class.
I'm going to handle it like dealing with a 2 year olds tantrums, and otherwise move on with my life and the advocating for the things that are important to me.

(9,909 posts)In my district, which is a gerrymandered mess covering tiny portions of four counties in SE Pa, roughly the shape of a jagged horseshoe probably 50 miles from toe to heel, and containing at LEAST, very broadly, 4 major demographics, the Democratic challenger was invisible. In visible. I had to look up who was running against the incumbent just to see if I wanted to vote for him. Nothing from this guy. Now, of course it's arranged for the district to go Repub and dilute a big chunk of Dems, but they didn't make any effort at all. Obama wouldn't be President if he sat around saying, Black guys don't get elected president, so it strikes me they could have given it a bloody shot.

(26,549 posts)Democratic turnout was bad in 2010. So Republicans won, and Republicans got to control redistricting. They gerrymandered themselves a majority.

races are at least as important, and in many cases even more important. That is why voter turnout is so much lower in off years. I assume the same tendency operates even in presidential years, though. A lot of voters on our side probably didn't bother to learn about the other candidates, or to understand precisely what was at stake in those elections. They knew they liked the handsome, cool rock star prez, and they found the other guy unappealing or even repellent. So they went out and voted for the guy they recognized and liked, but I am willing to bet that a lot of people who voted for Presdient Obama did not bother voting for some or all of the downticket races.
The RW voters, on the other hand, are fed a steady, relentless diet of propaganda, not just by radio, but by other means as well, including their churches, the MSM, programs on FOX, and columnists and op eds in the newspapers. They know that every election counts. They even vote for minor local positions, because they understand that local, county, and state elections are the pipeline that pour seasoned, name-familiar candidates onto the national political stage.
The RW voters voted straight R, and they voted in every race. Some of the Obama voters probably left some races blank, and some probably even voted "R" in other races because the guy's name was familiar--or even because they are actually Republicans, but broke ranks with their party rather than see Romney elected, or in some cases even because of Obama's undeniable charisma.

(4,423 posts)much better if the House had shifted, how can so many people be so stupid? The problem with the way the electorate looks is that it gives talking points to the teaheads. They will claim that in fact it is the takers in society that voted for Obama. I was working last night and that was the reaction the teabaggers had, i.e., well we better all just sign up for the free stuff cause its only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down...

(5,763 posts)According to the Diane Rehm show, in North Carolina, for instance, the total amount of votes for Dem House candidates slightly exceeded Repub candidates. But the representatives they're sending to the House are 9-3 Repubs. That's right. Dems beating them on the popular vote, turns into a 3-1 margin for the Repubs.
Just as Democracy ought to work.

(5,763 posts)The more rational ones know this, and they know that the fortunes of the Republican Party are going to sink from here. But they're entrenched in the House, probably for the decade.

(13,877 posts)as the incredibly cretinous centerpiece of RW obstructionism, an inordinate number will be more likely to be positively affected by the centerpiece of the "socialist" Left Wing over the next two years. Women, as caretakers, decision makers and health care consumers, are unequally affected across all segments of the population.

(7,404 posts)People don't wait in line for 6 hours to vote unless they are voting for something rather than against something. My guess is that more Romney people gave up and left those lines, even in Obama strongholds, than did Obama voters. Indeed, one of Obama's first comments was "we've got to fix that", meaning the screwed up voting and 6 hour lines. People are not going to forget, and that means 2014.
