The fact that Republicans put this clown up in the first place, or that New York Democrats didn't do their due diligence and bring all this nonsense out to light in the first place? Seriously, I really don't know.

(7,870 posts)St. George (George Santos?) was the perfect GOP token-everything: gay/Jewish (with Holocaust bonafides)/Hispanic/immigrant/educated/Wall Street/charitable/Republican...and because the GOP needed to prove they were an all inclusive big tent party, they embraced this "I'll be whatever you want me to be" fabulist...and now ol' Kevin McCarthy has a new kind of problem..the obscene screeching poop-throwing MAGA baboons...and.. George Santos, a shape shifting Russian tool...

(297,935 posts)down thread. This isn't running for Senator.. it's the NY 3 District.
Oh, I'll post it here.. TY

He ran for this office twice. It should have been made known locally and nationally. Even if media would not report it you keep trying, and run tons of tv ads listing his numerous lies and frauds. One small local paper is not enough. Someone like this needs to be slammed non stop.

(8,102 posts)Firstly, it's disgraceful that the guy got this far but we have to remember they literally have NO shame!
Having said that, whoever does opposition research dropped the ball on this one. I have NO idea how any of that works but I partially blame his opponent, Democratic candidate Robert Zimmerman.

(11,833 posts)...No one is hating on Democrats. We're just asking, given the depth of this clown's deception, how this wasn't a bigger story given the national focus on the NY midterms. That's all. No hating. So, take your 5th-grade shade somewhere else.

(18,378 posts)In addition, the DSCC issued a press release the same day that highlighted key findings of the oppo research team, including Santos's failure to file requisite financial disclosure documents, his multiple evictions, his ties to the Harbor City Capital ponzi scheme, and his unexplained post-2020 dramatic increase in personal wealth.
Both the Republican Party and the media careerists have been very busy this week pointing fingers at the Democratic Party, as if we are the ones responsible for the candidacy of George Santos and the failure to report (and further investigate) candidate Santos's shady background.
And for some reason, folks keep insisting that New York Democrats are to blame

(18,378 posts)In our talking points we made the case for Bob Zimmerman and warned voters about Santos's sketchy background.
One local newspaper covered the oppo research in depth. It wound up endorsing Zimmerman despite the fact that it has a long record of generally endorsing Republicans.
In a story first broken by the North Shore Leader over four months ago, the national media has suddenly discovered that US Congressman-elect George Santos (R-Queens / Nassau) - dubbed "George Scam-tos" by many local political observers - is a deepfake liar who has falsified his background, assets, and contacts. He is fact a wanted petty criminal in Brazil.
The New York Times published a lengthy expose on Santos this week detailing that virtually everything Santos has said, filed and published about himself is a lie.
Santos claims to be a "wealthy man" in corporate finance, who owns mansions in Oyster Bay and the Hamptons; was a graduate of Baruch College and attended New York University; lost four co-workers in the 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub massacre; has millions in cash assets - and even spoke at local Synagogues claiming he is Jewish. All lies.
Instead, Santos is a really just a petty criminal from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is currently wanted in Brazil on criminal charges of committing elder fraud and check forgery. He stole checkbooks from the elderly patients of his late mother - who was a home healthcare nurse - and forged the checks to steal merchandise, according to prosecutors in Brazil.

(1,766 posts)That the oppo research WAS done, that the Democrat was bringing it up all the time, and still the big-time media (looking at YOU, NY SLIMEbagS) ignored it.

(11,833 posts)"...issued a press release..." That all seems lazy to me. But, I have heard very recently that some media outlets weren't interested because none of them thought he had a chance of winning. I mean, how does this clown make it through the process? They're talking of extraditing him to Brazil because he's wanted on fraud charges there as well for Christ's sake. It boggles the imagination, which is why I asked the question. No hate, or bashing of Democrats. Just asking what I think are legitimate questions.

(18,378 posts)Do yo have any idea what an uphill battle it generally is to elect Democrats on Long Island?
Do you understand that two popular Democratic incumbents retired and that we were essentially defending open seats?
Are you aware that the Hobbs factor was largely absent in NY because Roe v Wade was codified into a state statute years ago?
Do you know how difficult it is to break through with a message when a consortium of superpacs spends tens of millions of dollars on continually running negative ads tying Democrats to apocryphal "radical socialists with a defund the police agenda"?
Do you know what it feels like to raise questions about a candidate's credentials with the press whose sole interest is flogging a CRIME! CRIME! CRIME! INFLATION! INFLATION! INFLATION! story line?
I began phone banking for Democrats as soon as the August primary was over. I trained phone bankers and canvassers for both the NY-3 and NY-4 races. We made the case for Bob Zimmerman and raised the questions about George Santos, one voter at a time.
Those higher up in the county party continually raised questions about Santos's background and new-found wealth with contacts in a largely disinterested press who had taken for granted that because Santos would never be elected, the story was a dead end.
That same press buried stories concerning a probe into Trump poster boy Lee Zeldin's illegal coordination with superpacs and failed to build on the leg work of a small local newspaper (The North Shore Leader) which characterized George Santos as a dishonest fabulist as early as September.
So actually no, we did not let that seat "slip through our fingers".
