Former Top Trump Aide: Republicans Thought Lying About 2020 Would Help CareersGriffin named several top Republican professionals as deliberately promoting falsehoods, particularly Kayleigh McEnany, who was serving as the White House Press Secretary at the time but subsequently landed a job as a co-host of Outnumbered, a daily political discussion show on Fox.
Kayleigh is a liar and an opportunist, Griffin told the committee. Shes a smart woman. Shes a Harvard law grad. This is not an idiot. She knew we lost the election, but she made a calculation that she wanted to have a certain life post-Trump that required staying in his good graces. And that was more important to her than telling the truth to the American public.
According to Griffin, McEnany decided that even though she knew Trump had lost, supporting his deception campaign to illegally remain in office would be good for her career:
I think she saw that as a moment to kind of, like, if I do this one last public-facing stand for Trump, Im going to be set. This is going to work out for me. And, I mean, it did. She got her FOX News gig. She it worked out precisely how shed always planned for it to, but she knew better.

(89,282 posts)And she did something similar before when she was actually critical of Trump but then started supporting him. I believe that was a career move also. And even then it worked out for her as she got into Harvard after appearing on CNN supporting Trump and she got the White House Job .

(12,881 posts)There are thousands of Republican operatives, media mothpieces, and officeholders who spout the Trumpian lies, and they basically fall in two categories:
Those who are stupid or crazy enough to believe the lies.
Those who know they're telling lies but do so to advance their careers.
Which is worse?

Zealots who believe the lies can be more dangerous, but there would be far fewer crazies if not for the liars.

(32,849 posts)I'm not even sure if she showed up for work at the White House after the November election. A lot of them didn't - they were looking for other jobs. If she was there, she didn't have much to do. The press stopped paying attention to her. The story quickly became Rudy Giuliani, and the other crazy lawyers of "Stop the Steal" fame. Chump wouldn't stop tweeting about rigged elections or having his secret conspiracy meetings. I'm sure Kayleigh was excluded from all of that.
After the election, the White House's everyday business ceased to function. I remember reading news stories that a lot of White House staffers were out sick with Covid, which may have been true. But the employees who wanted no part of the coup needed a good reason for not coming to work, and Covid became a convenient excuse.
Maybe McEnany made a few half-hearted attempts at running lame press conferences, but how many paid attention?
