A Florida English teacher who is pushing a ban on nearly 150 books from school libraries has a history of making racist and anti-LGBTQ+ statements, according to former students.
And she just got an innocuous book on gay penguins And Tango Makes Three banned from county schools for indoctrination.
Vickie Baggett, a high school English teacher at Northview High School in Escambia County, Florida, has submitted 148 of the 150 book challenges being reviewed by the Escambia School District this year. Many of the challenged books are by Black authors or deal with LGBTQ+ topics.
Last December, Baggett told journalist Jedd Legum that she believes the books violate either the states Stop Woke Act, which aims to limit the instruction of topics related to the history of racism in the U.S., or the Parental Rights in Education Act, Floridas so-called Dont Say Gay Law, which prohibits the instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in Kindergarten through third grade.

It's only going to get worse as the fetishism of an absolutist take the 1st Amendment renders it a key part of a national suicide pact, as do other long-wave flaws in the Constitution (Electoral College, the very nature of hhe Senate, the 2nd Amendment disastrous ambiguity, etc etc).

(10,000 posts)... wouldn't a teacher know Penguin Books do not make children gay? This type of book would only make children more accepting of gay people. Also, it could make a gay student feel more positive! I would pre-read this book and think it might be a great one for my "Read-a-Loud" time. Kids see gay people all the time... this Florida teacher must seen TV? She could also have gay parents show up at her "open house"! Hopefully, she will get some professional development and become more accepting.

(16,916 posts)Accepting the mere existence of LGBTQ+ individuals and teaching inclusion and empathy is not "indoctrination". Showing a world that isn't monochromatic isn't "indoctrination". There needs to be as much organized pushback against these bigots as there is a movement behind them pushing this nonsense.
