Texas Supreme Court pauses lower court's order allowing pregnant woman to have an abortionThe order by the all-Republican court came more than 30 hours after Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two from the Dallas area, received a temporary restraining order from a lower court judge that prevents Texas from enforcing the state's ban in her case.
In a one-page order, the court said it was temporarily staying Thursday's ruling without regard to the merits." The case is still pending.
While we still hope that the Court ultimately rejects the states request and does so quickly, in this case we fear that justice delayed will be justice denied, said Molly Duane, an attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing Cox.
Cox's attorneys have said they will not share her abortion plans, citing concerns for her safety. In a filing with the Texas Supreme Court on Friday, her attorneys indicated she was still pregnant.
Cox was 20 weeks pregnant this week when she filed what is believed to be the first lawsuit of its kind since the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that overturned Roe v. Wade. The order issued Thursday only applied to Cox and no other pregnant Texas women.

Whatever stories your mum had from a remove? I promise you that mine saw far worse than that, up close.
It was so bad, she hardly ever talks about it. And this was a woman who thought nothing of talking about staph infections at the dinner table.

If she wants to try again for another child she needs to move quickly.! My heart goes out to her. An unbelievable nightmare that is believable because it is happening in front of our very eyes!

(1,192 posts)How is this even allowed in the USA? This woman needs an abortion! There is no question about that! The GQP must want to lose every national election for the next 20 years, because if this shit doesn't change, that is what will happen!
I do not recognize my country anymore. The Fed needs to get involved at some point.
I don't care what any liberal Texan says about Texas being a decent state. It's not. It is a fascist state. And until Texans get serious about making changes there, it will be known as the One Star State, not the Lone Star state.
Figure it out Texas! Get off your asses and vote! Ohio did it, you can too!

(66,108 posts)She seems to think her health is not at risk. She is 29 and cannot find an OB-Gyn who can give her care. She says they have fled Texas because they cannot practice medicine in the state. She is well off and can afford to travel for her health care but I worry about her.
This is a perversion of the state. I am a 3rd generation Texan, left many years ago and never went to back (to live...only to visit relatives) . My roots are deep in the state but it is a living hell for women and girls there.
LeftInTX
(32,761 posts)I saw my Gyn today. (However, she did change practices, so I don't know if something happened after Roe was overturned) It is a smaller practice.

(9,500 posts)I'm at least a 4th generation Texas. I left in 1988 and moved to California.
I've visited several times (in fact, I'm in Dallas now working with/for a good friend who has a small business). It's HEARTBREAKING to see what's happening here.
I hope this woman has gone to another state for her necessary procedure. New Mexico is about eight hours away by driving and about 1 1/2 hours by plane. She lives in North Texas (where Dallas is). New Mexico is the closest state that allows abortions.
CTyankee
(66,108 posts)constantly worried, you have the gun issue as well. You can legally carry in Texas, right? I would not feel safe anywhere, knowing someone could be legally carrying a loaded weapon and could start shooting, killing or wounding who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I've gotten used to feeling safe in CT. Even the Sandy Hook shooting did not make me feel unsafe in crowds, because I know it is so unlikely given our own lawmakers and city officials. I feel very safe in New Haven (even tho there are troubled areas, I don't go there).
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)Texas is no different than any other state in that regard. Connecticut requires a license for concealed carry, which in turn requires taking a course, then you get your license.

(66,108 posts)And, she has made friends and colleagues and is on a career path. but she is aware that she has such a privilege and her family is strongly Democratic (her dad is a political consultant for a liberal political consulting firm in Boston. So yes. she has privilege and other women in the state don't have her advantages.
I don't get it either. I think I'd be miserable but she isn't.

(5,805 posts)Perhaps you should rethink your implication that we 'liberal' Texans don't vote.

(9,500 posts)The dynamics of Texas politics is too complicated for me to go into right now (Anyone else?, Bueller? Bueller?).
Your ridiculously simplistic statement: "Figure it out Texas! Get off your asses and vote! Ohio did it, you can too!" may not even be doable. Texans may not have the mechanisms available to them.
Ohio has a Republican Governor, a Republican Senator (J.D. Vance), and a Replican controlled legislature.
Here's an article about what Ohio voters approved (regarding abortion access/rights) that I think you're referring to:

(1,192 posts)This is one of the most disgusting abuses of human rights I have seen in a very very long time. That entire Court should be removed and charged with crimes against humanity. But here we are, in the USA, and nothing gets done. Hell, hardly anyone has posted in this thread.
Everybody is just too worried about Hamas and Israel. I will not post in any threads about that stupid mess anymore. Because it IS stupid. That conflict will NEVER END because no one side can own anything they have done to the other. I am 56 years old and that BS has been going since I was born. Let them kill each other, I no longer care. We have offered so many solutions, but neither side wants to hear them.
Shit like this in our own country needs more attention. We can solve this issue. So let's get down to doing it and then maybe we can help solve other countries' issues.

(9,190 posts)lackeys that treat women and their healthcare as something that they will dictate then we have truly become a State of disgusting people. In my mind all the women of Texas should rise up and make it clear that this will not be tolerated - but it won't happen because we have a large segment of people that are part of a religious cult that has told them it is evil to decide what is right for you as a human being - that is God's choice through government to make.
As far as the Israel/Palestinian thing - it is a depressing subject. There is wrong on both sides. Exclude the leaders of both Israel and Palestine and the people are the victims of this mess - as it always is in war. One thing that kind of amazes me is we are paying little attention to the victims in Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, or any of the millions that are forced to live in refuge camps in starvation circumstances - we pick and choose who we have empathy for.
It seems the entire world has gone mad sometimes....

She is at risk for fertility issues if she has another C-section
Doctors will not induce labor if they fear her uterus will rupture, they will perform another C-section.
___
Women do carry Trisomy 18 babies to term.
Prior to 2022: They may want to carry them or in many cases, they just didn't have access to abortion. (low income, poor prenatal care, didn't think about it, no insurance, medicaid doesn't cover it, etc)
...but isn't there always the risk of septic shock in a case like this? Something could always go wrong.
LeftInTX
(32,761 posts)It usually happens after fetal death.
An unhealthy fetus does not cause maternal sepsis, however a dead fetus can.
She's running out of time to get an abortion in other states.
She needs to leave Texas. I don't think any state performs abortions after 24 weeks.

In 2024, if women, Millennials, GenZs, LGBTQ people, educated people...pretty much everyone except the MAGATs, don't literally crawl over broken glass to vote D no matter what, then this country will have the government the MAGATs and other ignorant, apathetic Americans deserve.
The problem is, the rest of us DO NOT deserve that government.
