" French prosecutors on Friday ordered far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen to stand trial over claims she used EU funds to finance party activities in France.
In March, Le Pen will be joined by 26 other members of the National Rally (RN) party in the dock, all accused of setting up a system for embezzling EU money to hire staff in France".

(21,615 posts)I did some research and learned that, over the years, many other democratic countries have charged elected their current and/or former elected officials with corruption.
Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, was convicted of crimes in 2021. He was sentenced to prison, but is currently appealing the convictions.
The USA is finally following the lead of other democratic countries in charging a former elected official with corruption in a court of law.
I found this article from Axios which details countries, in which former leaders were charged and/or convicted of crimes, mostly related to corruption.
https://www.axios.com/2022/08/26/countries-where-former-leaders-jailed-charged
Former President Trump declared after being indicted in New York that "THE USA IS NOW A THIRD WORLD NATION," a statement echoed by his sons and many of his supporters.
The big picture: In reality, leaders who left office since 2000 have been jailed or prosecuted in at least 78 countries including in democracies like France, Israel and South Korea.
Since 1980, around half of the world's countries have had at least one such case, and that's not counting impeachments or coups.

(11,790 posts)The Far-Right pols are the same--grifters and thieves. They call themselves populists as they rip off their constituents and/or any organization for personal gain.
Another warning as too many countries lean into this 'populist' scam.

In a way they are.
They are punished for the belief that they are above the law.
