Now in Tel Aviv:
One of the biggest anti-government rallies since October 7.
Slogans like impeachment now and Bibi is a criminal fill the air.
After 16 years in power, people here tell me they no longer think Netanyahu is the right leader for Israel. Especially now.

(39,995 posts)Citizens put up with this stuff because they think repression of their rights helps keep them safe. Well that just blew up in Bibis face I think

The citizens' bargain to accept some repression on themselves and lots on Palestinians blew up in their face. The citizens did not get the security they were promised and expected.

(17,208 posts)There were ample opportunities not to have Bibi in charge at this moment. Israeli voters chose this instead of that. Now they get to reap what was sown -- not unlike the US having T"not my President"FG as POTUS during a novel viral pandemic causing hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths. And others with minimal agency in that leadership decision suffer alongside.
Think. Again.

(3,767 posts)and I'm Jewish. Nothing new here - there were anti Netanyahu protests and marches against him and his government in Israel before 10/7.
However if you look at some current issues, Jewish people everywhere are being attacked for what Netanyahu and the Israeli right wing's actions. THAT is antisemitic.

(29,545 posts)Criticism of Netanyahu doesnt equal antisemitism. That is my only point. Just like the saying Black Lives Matter doesnt mean white lives dont matter, saying Netanyahu is a problem doesnt mean Jewish people en masse are the problem. I get that you and other Jews feel threatened right now. My housemates are Jewish and worried about putting up mezuzahs in our very liberal state. I have much sympathy for anyone feeling threatened, which is why I stand for peace - for the innocents on both sides, and against Netanyahu.

thats critical of Israeli politics is antisemitic is a prejudiced POV in and of itself.

(91,840 posts)The fact that Netanyahu is a failure and needs to go does not take blame away from those that attacked and those making excuses for them to supporting them.

(6,484 posts)In Israel you can have an anti-government rally. Palestinians, who oppose Hamas could not have an anti-Hamas rally before October 7. I am willing to bet that many Palestinians are afraid to speak out against Hamas because they fear their families would be harmed if they do so.

(17,178 posts)I wonder how secure the elections are in Palestinian territory. Israelis and Palestinians are going to have to sit down and figure this out if we're ever going to get a two state solution. But some people, on both sides, don't want to solve the problem. The people who are encouraging this violence shouldn't be in power. They really should be put in prison.

(27,770 posts)They played their stupid right wing games forgetting their main job, which was to protect the people and secure the nation. They both ignored the lights flashing red.
Both events were nation changing moments. It's hopeful to see many Israelis once again focusing on the root of the problem, a right wing government and Netanyahu himself.

It would be the same shit but you are right that is exactly what should have happened anyway, damn the torpedoes though I think the level of fog between the belief it couldn't happen and reports of all sorts of possible activities are far thicker than many wish to pretend. They very likely "knew" in the exact same way about all kinds of attacks that never materialized.
There seems to be a thought that there is some total, perfect awareness and even shit bordering on magic because we provide a few billion in aid though this misses we don't have any such things and spend well over a hundred times that.
