(14,083 posts)We need more immigrants, not fewer. We dont have enough medical workers (caregivers and nurses primarily), construction workers, skilled labor (plumbing, electricians, etc.).

(5,559 posts)We need to fix our system, allowing in those we need, for the time we need them, and yes - deport those who are not here legally. I do however welcome a process (during this reform and transition) for those here illegally to have preferential treatment for legal work visas for which they are qualified. Also special treatment / status for those who have been here most of their lives.

(14,083 posts)I do think we should make legal immigration easier.

I can see the necessity of restricting entry of something, but I'm totally against deporting people who have lived here if just for a few years and contributed to society.

(14,864 posts)slippery slope there once the apparati is in place.
Your documentation is no longer valid because we don't like the country you came from or your religion or something you said, so off you go.
Your parents weren't properly documented? Your citizenship isn't valid, so off you go.
Member of a terrorist org like blm or antifa (or just sympathize, whatever that means), lost your right to citizenship, off you go.
But before that you will lose your rights to vote, to work, to receive any assistance, to have a bank account or credit card, to have a drivers license, or own property.
If you commit a crime while under suspended rights, you are gone.

(8,842 posts)is an obvious method to dampen the number of undocumented immigrants.
The investigation and prosecution could be viewed as a jobs program as to be effective as the reach would need to be broad. 😜
Go after corporations. Perhaps large corporations could be treated on something similar to class action.
Go after small business such as roofers and yard care. Substantial fines that make hiring illegal workers non-economic.
Doubt that anything of effective scope and depth is likely.

(6,225 posts)They have jobs that contribute to, and support, our economy.
It would be a devastating blow to our economy to engage in mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
Can you imagine the thousands of businesses that would close, and the amount of fruit and vegetables that would rot in the fields without them?
The price of food would rise dramatically, as would many other goods and services we rely on. Inflation could go back to pandemic levels.
This deportation mentality is insane.

(5,547 posts)There have also been some problems with the migrants behavior, it is many little ways people are starting to feel this. It isn't like it is a small amount of money, NYC spent $1.45 billion in 2023 to care for the undocumented. The right is going after low hanging fruit, some people are living on the edge, the idea that the money should be spent on them instead finds support very easily.
walkingman
(7,671 posts)of allowing the border patrol (FEDS) to control the situation they are actually using Texas taxpayer money to bus/fly these folks to Blue cities around the nation (BTW - aren't most cities Blue?).
Were is not for them this situation would be forced on Congress to do something instead of using immigration for political purposes - which is the only reason they are doing it.
NYC immigrant problem is another example of the chaos that the GOP uses (quite effectively) to further their political agenda.
