IT SUCKS!
Watching "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" and one of my husband's co-workers texted; "Are you in the tornado's path?" IMMEDIATLY turned on the news, and YUP...it was heading right for us! No sooner than we had turned on the news, the sirens started blaring and the arduous task of wrangling 6 chihuahuas took place. We went though this last week, TWICE! So, we did get the time cut down from 5 minutes to three. Jammed everyone in the closet and waited. News broadcasting, on the phone: Tornado on the ground! 100MOH Winds! Take Cover Immediately!"
Finally, "all clear", which lasted 15 minutes before the sirens started blaring again. Everyone back in the closet! Waited. We could hear the rain and wind. It was bad, but the storm, unbeknownst to us, had shifted slightly...to the north! Awesome (for us) because it meant it was going above us. All clear!
Six minutes pass....SIRENS BLARING! Back in the closet! Thankfully, this only lasted 3 minutes, and since, we have been able to breathe, though it is hot and humid as hell! We are STILL under a tornado watch until 8am.
Hubby is now in bed with four dogs (the puppies still have to sleep in the nursing pen downstairs). And, of course, threw my hip out of joint, so had to fix that; always fun.
I have lived in Oklahoma off and on for almost 20 years, and this past month has been the worst I have ever seen. Since returning her from NOLA, we had more tornado warnings with sirens in the past two weeks, then in the past 7 years. This is really fucked up weather!
If you are in Missouri adjoining Oklahoma and Kansas....BE READY!!!

(21,833 posts)We get them occasionally here in western NY, but not often. Last one was 14 years ago.
But when I lived in Ohio for 5 years, we had a lot of watches and warnings every year. The ones that scared me the most were watches for overnight hours. I could not sleep those nights. Afraid of getting blown away in my sleep. There were no warning sirens where we lived but the network TV stations did use an attention getting beep when they announced warnings. So I used to move the portable TV into the bedroon and leave it on all night.

(54,085 posts)The sound will cause me to wake. My husband, on the other hand, is deaf in one ear and sleeps with his good ear to the pillow, so he never hears the sirens at night. I have lived all over the country, so tornadoes are not new to me. I actually saw one pick up a train car when we lived in Tennessee.
Our area had some serious damage, but luckily our side of town didn't get hit.

(54,085 posts)We have two chis who are almost 15yo, one who is almost deaf, the other who is almost completely blind. The puppies, 10 weeks old, are easy enough to pick up and toss in a carrier. The parents are both 1yo and they were a little freaked because they thought they were in trouble. So, we had to chase one of them down.

(6,741 posts)Fortunately we havent had the tornadoes because they dodge the main part of the city and usually head north from our place.
We left Houston are 6 years ago and the storms there increased their ferocity by a noticeable amount the last couple of years. I called the rainstorms rainbombs because thats what they felt like.
Last week one of the towns (Groveton)here got 23.5 in one day!!!!
Im afraid people living in the tornado ally are fated to have these kinds of storms regularly now.
Hoping it wont be the new normal but I have doubts.

(54,085 posts)I am really afraid of what is coming the next few months because it has NEVER been this bad. It just seems to keep coming. Of course, then we get the flooding that comes after these storms and that sucks too.
"Hoping it wont be the new normal but I have doubts." Samesies!

(7,696 posts)Do the doggies act oddly resulting in an early warning even prior to the sirens?

(54,085 posts)I was surprised Willow didn't get pissed off. I forgot to mention her in the OP. She is our 23yo parrot. She was sleeping in her cage, so I had to throw a blanket around her cage. Normally, waking her up like that and she would start screeching. She didn't.

(35,871 posts)It was really bad. Afterwards when I went out to see the damage, it seemed like something evil had been there because there was mud splattered all over the place.
Im glad chihuahuas are little ! And Im glad you are ok. Thank you for telling us your story. It puts a human face on it.

(54,085 posts)Fortunately, most weren't direct hits to my area. This...this was WAY too close for comfort. There is some serious damage in our town.
Well, most of my chis are small. Believe it or not, I have a 13lb chihuahua! LOL! We actually had a DNA test on him to make sure he was actually a full chi or try to figure out what other mix was there...nope, just a big boy chihuahua.

(2,899 posts)Here in NEKS. Havent had to hit the storm shelter yet, but when we do it's hubs and I, 9 cats and a 100+lb dog. I think wrangling dogs might be easier than cats, tho.
Stay safe!

(54,085 posts)Tony, who passed away 10 years ago, I can't believe it has been that long. However, during events like this, I simply hollered for him and he came running and got in my lap in the closet.
Keep a close eye on your situation. Things here got real serious, real FAST!

3 dogs, 8 cats, 2 adult humans, interior bedroom walk-in closet. I can relate. It's what we do for those we love.
It is work, though and one dog always farts when we have to huddle for storms.
How are the puppies doing? Love Chihuahua puppies. So adorable.

(54,085 posts)Meet Erebus (1st pic) and Bambú (2nd pic)!
As for the hip, I just finished 4 month of PT, and I do some at home now, but in situations where I have to squat for a period of time, it can cause my hip to slip the joint...always a fun time.
