(47,992 posts)I'm pretty good at speculation and I can't imagine what anyone is capable of saying about what happened.
I REALLY can't imagine being able to say anything else about it. I hope someone brings some of those responses here, because I'm really curious how anyone could think anything other than the absolutely unmitigated, completely unjustifiable, bald-faced shameful SHAME of Republican behavior on this issue.
I simply cannot imagine how Republicans can hold their heads up above the shear embarrassment of being Republicans.

(46,311 posts)Hatch was the colleague of both Bob Dole and Ted Kennedy. Actually he was close friend of Kennedy and they'd eat together often and socialize together. Democrats weren't the enemy to Hatch for many many years.
Hatch voted against this treaty on December 4, which was essentially voting against Bob Dole, a longtime colleague in the Senate.

REPORT: How Koch Industries Makes Billions Corrupting Government And Polluting For Free (Part 2)
By Lee Fang on Mar 1, 2011 at 7:00 pm
In an opinion piece published today responding to his critics, Koch Industries CEO Charles Koch promised to continue to finance anti-government, right-wing front groups. Charles writes that the purpose of business is to efficiently convert resources into products and services that make peoples lives better. But when it comes to Kochs carcinogenic pollution and carbon emissions, the purpose of Kochs political giving is to avoid any financial responsibility no matter who gets hurt. Koch Industries has cornered the market in monetizing some of the most dirty industrial businesses. Koch imports oil from the Middle East, refines high-carbon Canadian crude, maintains coal-burning plants, owns one of the largest oil pipeline networks in America, runs environmentally hazardous lumber mills, produces toxic chemicals, and manufacturers fertilizer. The University of Masschusetts Amherst has scored Koch as among the top ten worst air polluters for its carcinogenic chemicals.
Much of the entire Koch political machine is geared towards ensuring that Koch Industries never has to compensate the people and ecosystems damaged by Koch Industries pollution. Koch front groups from Tea Party groups to think tanks have diligently promoted Koch Industries bottom line by denying global warming, fighting regulations on Kochs cancer-causing chemicals, and snuffing out investigations into Kochs environmental crimes:
In 1990, as both Republicans and Democrats proposed a cap and trade system to address acid rain, Koch financed a front group called Concerned Citizens for the Environment to battle proposed regulations. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the group has no citizen membership of its own, but produced studies arguing that acid rain was a myth and that deregulation would benefit the environment. Koch refineries and factories, top emitters of acid rain-causing toxins, were impacted by the successful cap and trade system. A front group founded by David Koch, Citizens for a Sound Economy (which later changed its name to Americans for Prosperity), also battled regulations designed to combat acid rain, labeling the problem a myth.
Koch Industries vastly expanded its political giving in reaction to revelations that the company had systematically stolen oil from Native American reservations and federal lands. Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), a personal friend of the Koch brothers and top recipient of Koch money, sponsored legislation to suppress an investigation into the oil thefts. Over 50 Koch Industries employees later testified that indeed the Koch Method of manipulating data to surreptitiously take Native American oil resulted in an estimated 300 million gallons of oil the company received for free. Koch later settled for $25 million in penalties.

(24,721 posts)With due respect to Bob Dole's sad situation, the chickens have come home to roost for the Bob Dole I remember: a snide, mean senator. It wasn't until he was out of office & of no consequence that he reached out to Bill Clinton. I'd love to know what thoughts were going through Elizabeth Dole's head during the vote; she was even less flexible as a senator than her husband was. A real-life "what the hell have I done?" moment, if I ever saw one.
Pretty sad. Republicans just don't get the picture until it happens to them.
I'm sad for the Doles, nevertheless.

But then, we're Liberals, we have heart. Probably doesn't bother the Republicans one iota.

(18 posts)Senator Chambliss said he voted against it because they weren't supposed to bring up any votes on treaties in December so the Senate could focus on avoiding the fiscal cliff. In other words it was a BS response from a Republican Senator.

I find saxby chambliss to be a disgusting piece of treasonous, selfish, chickenhawk piece of flaming dogshit. He is lower than low! I will NEVER forget what he did to Max Cleland, a triple amputee veteran of the Vietnam War, who continued to serve his country so honorably once he left the service - with only one arm remaining to him, mind you! He left both his legs and his other arm back in Vietnam. shithead chambliss (whatthehell kind of name is saxby, anyway?) NEVER served. NEVER wore his country's uniform. NEVER saw combat (except maybe from his fucking lazy-ass living room TV) or put himself in harm's way in service to America. Yet this lowlife weasel had the gall to accuse Max Cleland of being unpatriotic and un-American because he opposed going to war in Iraq. And thereby took his Senate seat away from him. BASTARD BASTARD BASTARD!!!! saxby chambliss is a national disgrace on two healthy legs.
The only disgrace I find that's worse is on the heads and consciences of each and every one of the Georgia voters who originally swallowed that scum whole, and voted for chambliss against Max Cleland. What is WITH those people???????? I'm STILL pissed off about that one!!!!!

(10,942 posts)Dole, along with Newt Gingrich started the trend that has resulted in a dysfunctional Congress. They did so because it was politically expedient for them at that time. Leaders think ahead and envision the consequences of their present decisions, if Dole had done that during the 90s, he would have foreseen the consequences of his political conduct.

Allen Simpson is about the only Republican of any note that has been willing to say anything remotely approaching the truth about the lunatics that have taken over the GOP. Every Republican who remains silent is complicit.
I would have a lot more compassion for Bob Dole if he had opened his damn mouth and spoken the truth any time in the past 10 years. As far as I know he has not lost his mental capabilities and could speak if he wanted to. If I am wrong about that, they I take it all back. But even in that case, Elizabeth Dole could speak.
