Ladies and Gentlemen, I bring you the heart of the GOP base.

(113,701 posts)This country breeds racism of the type embraced by the GOP faithful. Remember Christianity was used as a justification of slavery and race hatred and many of the type like those in Mississippi who are against interracial marriage are still using Cain and Abel as their vindication of their racial hatred.

(39,961 posts)That this is GOP voters, not the sane people of Mississippi.
However this is a point I have made and others have made before - if they can render one marriage invalid, they can render another marriage invalid. All of this banning gay marriage business isn't just about banning gay marriage - many of these cretins would like to ban interracial marriages (and probably inter-faith marriages).
Remember with the GOP it never stops where they say it stops, there's always a deeper agenda. We've clearly seen that abortion was never about abortion, it's about forcing women back into "their place". Gay marriage isn't just about gay marriage, either.

(113,701 posts)it isn't just that they can render anybody's marriage invalid--when I read some of the stuff they talk about, not to mention some of the idiot legislation they have already proposed, it makes me ill. things like the death penalty for WOMEN who commit adultery, or making divorce illegal, or a felony, or one year of mandated counseling (paid for by the couple, of course) before a divorce can be granted (and if there are children, NO divorce)--oh, they have all sorts of things in mind.

(39,961 posts)So please, don't go there and say that we all believe this. Many of us try very hard to fight against this type of ignorance.
Mississippi is I believe last or second to last in education, and it shows. Alabama is just as bad.

(30,151 posts)I grew up in Missouri, so trust me I know the stupid LOL....
But I left that shithole as fast as possible. Be that we have our own version of stupid here in Texas, but it pales in comparision to where you are. I'm sorry for you
I remember growing up and people in Missouri would laugh and talk about how ignorant the people in Arkansas were
Now I'm like, really

(13,409 posts)It certainly shows how incredibly ignorant and racist the GOP is, by and large. It doesn't seem to suggest nearly what it does about Mississippi as you think it does.

(26,020 posts)I've lived in 10 states in my lifetime - including 'blue bastions' such as Connecticut, California & Oregon - and I've encountered would-be miscegenationists in every one of them. I hope the day arrives when we're able to revise our preconceived notions about what people are like who live in a certain state or region of the country and accept that liberals can live in Mississippi and conservatives can be found right in San Francisco.
I realize that from a probability standpoint, you're more likely to find these bigots in the deep south and parts of the midwest & plains states, but it does a disservice to all the good people who happen to live in the same locale who don't share those notions.

(67,112 posts)living right in my neighborhood unbeknown to me when I picked that area thinking most of CA was fair and liberal back then. I sure agree with you, miscegenationists and similar can be found all over the place.
I think some areas are more prone to this, but one sure can't guarantee an absence of bigotry by state borders. I've also known liberals they were liberal in their own interests, but bigoted toward the rights of others.
And many often think the Midwest is all filled with RW bigots and the like, and it's far from the truth. Some areas are, but other areas are far from that.
MSM often hypes a lot of this by tagging parts of the country as this or that, making it sound like every person in that area is a carbon copy.

I've seen the Beauty of Lansing MI and the shithole that is called Little Rock. I've driven on the hell of highways around Atlanta and got taken to lunch by a nice lady in Phoenix.
I've got a pretty good understanding of where the heavy pockets of stupid are in this country. For example, DeSoto MO is pretty much full of stupid, I would say almost spilling over for example
That's why my theory pretty much rings true to everybody I explain it to. I need to come up with a name for it before somebody hijacks it. Anyway, If you are going to live in the lower 49 it's your best bet to pick a border state. So, either borders with Canada, Mexico or either ocean. Pick any one of those states and you're in pretty good shape. Stay away from the interior LOL...

(5,179 posts)we have racists here. Tons of 'em. The only difference is that the northern racist is slightly embarrassed about admitting how racist he or she is.
