“I’m thinking maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they’re here”

CHICAGO—Tweaking Republicans four days before the Illinois primary, President Barack Obama said Friday that the hopefuls campaigning to take his job would do well to channel the moderation and inclusiveness of the Land of Lincoln.

"I'm thinking maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they're here," Obama told a lunchtime fundraiser in Chicago.

"We've got some guests in Illinois this week," Obama noted at a donor event organized by Democratic lawyers. "Apparently they have not wrapped up on the other side."

While stumping in the state, Obama said he hopes those foes "take a little time to reflect on this great man."

CHICAGO, Ill. — With the Republican candidates flocking to his home state, President Barack Obama attacked the "avalanche of attack ads" that have come to dominate the Republican primary season.

"You may be watching this avalanche of attack ads, and you may think it’s not appealing to the better angels of our nature," Obama said . . .

"I hope that while my counterparts on the other side enjoy the outstanding hospitality of the people Illinois and spend some money here to promoting our economy. I hope they also take a little bit of time to reflect on this great man, the first Republican president. Of course, you may not feel confident that will happen...But hope springs eternal."

“This is a president who, in the midst of the Civil War, launched the transcontinental railroad, understanding that in order for America to grow, we had to stitch ourselves together,” Mr. Obama said.

“That vision of Lincoln’s, the vision of a big, bold, generous, dynamic, active, inclusive America – that’s the vision that has driven this nation for more than 200 years. That’s the vision that helped create Chicago,” he said. “That’s the vision that drove our campaign in 2008.”

Mr. Obama said Lincoln, the first Republican president, “knew that if we as a nation through our federal government didn’t act to facilitate these things, then they likely wouldn’t happen and as a result we would all be worse off.”

“Our politics may be divided, but most Americans understand that we are greater together, … we rise and fall as one people,” the president said. “That is what is at stake in this election.”

The president said the 2012 election would amount to a "great debate over whose vision will deliver for the American people."

"I don't want this nation to be known just for buying and consuming things," he said, but rather for creating things. He touted the benefits of his health care overhaul, the auto industry bailout, the nearly four million new jobs created in the past two years and his other accomplishments.

Still, Mr. Obama said, "There are still too many Americans out there who are struggling."

Mr. Obama said he's not a perfect man and could never be a perfect president. He also joked that it's not as "trendy" to be involved in the Obama campaign as it was in 2008. "Some of you rolled up those 'Hope' posters and they're in the closet somewhere," he quipped.

But, he added, "I'm more determined and more confident that what drove us in 2008 is the right thing for America than I've ever been before."
