Wow, this is ERIE. I found it on a website talking about Brownback. Not sure who wrote it because it was in the comments section

There was a leader of a country who bent over backwards for the social and religious conservatives. He outlawed many of the same behaviors and attitudes that the social conservatives of today consider so vital (a_bo_rt_ion, h_o_m_o_s_e_x_uality, graphics, etc). He exalted the church, protected the church and provided state recognition. He touted traditional moralality, he touted religion is schools. To provide a quote, Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith. . . we need believing people.
The social and christian conservatives were so enamored with him they pledged their overwhelming support. He even gained the support of the vatican. In short, he said and did a lot of the same things that todays GOP candidates are saying and it is almost to a tee of what the social/christian conservatives want.
This leader assumed power in Germany during the 1930′s and within 12 years the world would know about the holocaust.
The worse part is that he had the overwhelming support of the social/christian conservatives and of the catholic church (pope pius XII).
The parallels are striking and they are scary!
These GOP hacks are on their way to repeating history.

I think this religious over zealousy is going to backfire

i just wrote in another post on DU yesterday that I think it mirrors 1931 right now not 32 or 33 but we are one economic downturn away from those years
Look how the average German really just turned their head or started to agree with Hitler
He first went after the vulnerable smaller sectors of that society and the majority did little to defend or protest which in turn then justified the attack on these groups
With the power of media nowdays and the orchestrated division in this complacent country it could drop down alot quicker than the 30's

(114,904 posts)Hitler didn't bend over backwards for anyone. What he did ALWAYS advanced his own agenda and interests. Furthermore, Christian conservatives didn't all support him and weren't all enamoured with him.
This is such hackneyed ahistorical crap.
Some people just really want Hitler and Nazism to be all about Christianity. They weren't.
ChunderingTruth
(19 posts)of what kept him in power.
just about all of Hitlers speeches used Christianity to justifiy his actions.
The true 'Christians' would have stood up to him and his thugs instead of joining him and his pals.

(114,904 posts)at least in large part and that still doesn't make the op any more factual.

(6,843 posts)First of all,
Germany was a Lutheran country and England had long ago created the Anglican Church. Hitler hated the Catholic Church. Hated it, and many a historian believe that he would have rounded them up too, except he knew that there were far too many Catholics to pull that off.
The antisemitism in Europe was more of a
1) Rumor of a back-stabbing by Jewish officials in high positions during the first WW that ultimately led to the German defeat.
2) The Bolshevik Revolution, the creation of the Soviet Union, and communist dictatorships in Bavaria and Hungary scared people in Europe and in the United States. The Jewish leaders like Trotsky and Ernst Toller in Bavaria proclaimed the "natural" attraction of Jews and international communism.
3) The Treaty of Versailles made Germany pay reparations for their actions. Inflation went crazy, unemployment was skyrocketing. Rumors that Jewish bankers were manipulation the reparation payments for their own profit were abundant.
I know it is great fun on DU to make the Catholic Church responsible for all evil in the world, but really, the Church's role in Hitler's rise to power was minor. Financial and political reasons were much more prevalent.
edhopper
(33,651 posts)as a major point in anti-antisemitism in Europe and ignore the centuries of it by ALL the Christian Churches (Martin Luthor was a BIG anti-semite) is so short sighted as to be laughable.
Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)The Church is not the same thing as all christian churches. If you wanted to include antisemitic feelings by Lutherans, you should have noted the Lutheran Church. Instead, you cite The Church.
edhopper
(33,651 posts)the stuff about WWI is still hogwash.
Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)Which is what this poster is trying to state. That Hitler used The Church (Roman Catholic) to win over conservative religious types, and rode that into his power grab. He/she also stated that The Church promoted antisemitism which helped Hitler's rise and thus led to the Holocaust.
I point out that Hitler hated The Church and that Lutheranism had long been the official religion of Germany before Hitler took power. Hitler had no love for the Catholics. That whole Pius and Hitler were buds story is bullshit and I cringe every time someone re-iterates it.
lunasun
(21,646 posts)but he never officially left it in Germany.........
I also do not know where you got that as a whole Germans are mostly Lutheran because they are not
and never have been: it was divided by regions, but no longer so much due to modern mobility
Your declaration of Lutheran as official religion is from what source????
A state church does not exist in Germany and currently there are more Catholics than Protestants as a whole
If I didnt know better I would think you were trying to start a 30 year war or something.............
from wiki ..........
Christianity is the largest religion in Germany, with around 49.4 million adherents (62.8%) in 2008[17] of which 24.5 million are Protestants (29.9%) belonging to the EKD and 24.9 million are Catholics (30.0%)
Before the 1990 unification of the Federal Republic of Germany (or West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (or East Germany), Catholics were 45% of the West German
population.

(8,556 posts)I've never read anything about Hitler wanting to be a priest. Not saying it never crossed his mind, but I haven't seen any evidence that he ever considered it. In his younger days his father wanted him to be a civil servant, while he was more interested in being an artist.
Stalin, OTOH, actually trained to be an Orthodox Priest at a seminary school in Georgia. He was eventually kicked out for his political views.

Drahthaardogs

CTyankee
(63,926 posts)then I have done what I needed to do.
"Rumors", with nothing more and particularly without the important modifying adjective "slanderous," can remind those of us who have read history with what went on before every pogram. "Rumors" stoked passions, old prejudices and fears. They were things that flew out of Pandora's box to visit terror, destruction and death upon people.
Don't consider yourself "harassed." Consider yourself "schooled" a bit...

(6,843 posts)I am pretty sure I gained some insight too. The goats are tap tap tapping again. You better go and see what they want. They may need some "schooling" as well.
