(81,559 posts)Damn. Even when you know it's coming and you know it's inevitable. It's just freakin' hard.
Having been through it four times (parents and in-laws), you just get through it by putting one foot in front of the other. Step by step. One day at a time. And other cliches. Sometimes they're comforting. Because this time never is.
I'm so sorry to hear. All our sympathy, demtenjeep.

(31,997 posts)at this point, we (my 5 brothers and sisters) just hope she slips to sleep and quietly sleeps. We can not bear to watch her gasp for breath and struggle to get air. It is so hard.

(3,747 posts)May she rest in peace. I was with my mother when she died last week. I just kept telling her how strong and brave and courageous and beautiful she was and how much I loved her. I sang to her, told her stories, laughed with her other children and swabbed her mouth with water so she wouldn't be uncomfortable. I watched her leave this world and enter the next. When I think of her, I tell her how strong and brave she is and how wonderful her new life will be. You might want Hospice instead of the hospital; it is filled with Angels who want to help you.

(13,776 posts)So sad and so lovely at the same time. From what I've read, I would guess that the process of death itself is peaceful no matter what the circumstances leading up to it are, and it's definitely true that a lot of people prefer to die alone (they hang on for ages while everybody is there, and then in the split second when people leave the room to get a drink of water or whatever, they let go and die), but your mother's death sounds like the way I would choose to go, and what I would choose for my loved ones. (Not that we always get a choice... but I believe that the end result is still a wonderful sense of peace, no matter how we get there.)
She sounds beautiful and so do you. I'm sorry for your loss.
