Canada: 'Pierre Poutine' taped election call impersonating Liberals

Source: Globe and Mail

The robo-calls fraudster who hid behind the alias “Pierre Poutine” recorded a second misleading election-day message for Guelph voters that he never used: one that impersonated a call from Liberal candidate Frank Valeriote’s campaign. The unknown operative has also set up a second fake caller ID that would have shown robo-calls as coming from Mr. Valeriote’s campaign office at 519-837-2651. It also went unused.

Allan Mathews, the Elections Canada investigator probing robo-calls that sought to suppress the vote in the Southwestern Ontario riding during the 2011 federal ballot, has filed more documents in court detailing what he’s uncovered.

According to new filings, Matt Meier, the CEO of the Alberta firm used to make the robo-calls, also told Elections Canada that “Pierre” initially telephoned him directly on his unlisted office extension and asked for him by name when setting up his robo-calling account.

“Pierre referred to knowing someone in the Conservative Party,” Elections Canada investigator Al Mathews said.

Taking contracts from people with obvious aliases for names, having employees with fictional names and personas, allowing robo-calls to show false caller numbers...it all seems very duplicious.
