"It looks fairly sound and has rust streak from being out there for a year," said Marc Proulx, the maritime coordinator of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria, British Columbia.

The trawler is part of a giant debris field that was generated by the giant wall of water that struck the east coast of the island nation following a 9.0 earthquake, sweeping everything from cars to houses into the ocean.

It was first spotted by a Canadian military air patrol, and it has since been determined that it has been adrift without anybody at the helm since March 11, 2011, Proulx said.

I wonder if it's contaminated with radioactivity? Ecumenist Mar 2012 #3
Probably not, since the radiation wasn't released until after the tsunami struck. Liberty Belle Mar 2012 #7
I hope so. It would have had to be quite a distance away for it not to be contaminated. nt Ecumenist Mar 2012 #8

This ship was probably fairly far away by then.

But that's just my guess.

I just wanted the insurance money at this point. I hope they don't tow that wreck back!

It really is amazing what will stay floating through so much.

That something so large had been on the ocean for a year and no one had spotted it. I guess it drifted far from the normal shipping lanes.

...an object like that...just floating at sea...for a year. I can't quite place it. I dunno. I suppose it takes on the role of unspeaking witness to all the strange things that must go on at sea, whatever those things happen to be.

I did a little digging around and came across the strange case of The Baychimo, a ship which was abandoned and wound up floating around the arctic for something like forty years!
