He is in his 70's and rather than let nature takes its coarse and say, 'I've had a hell of a life--I've war mongered with the best of them--endorsed torture and killed thousands of innocent people--I think I can die a satisfied man--God, my only regret is I haven't shot more people in the face--what a high that was!' he decides to try and prolong his grasp on life with a heart transplant. My guess is that he fears dying and what death will bring. He isn't as sure of his Christian beliefs of an after life as he thought. He'll do all he can to try and squeek out another few years--or even another few months and to hell with younger, perhaps needier people who could have benefitted by that heart.
I know these are heartless thoughts about a man who always seemed to me to have no heart at all.

Maybe Cheney worries that the Preacher may prove right after all, and vanity of vanities, Cheney won't be able to whitewash his sins.
There's been no justice for him in this life. Perhaps he worries that his luck's about to run out, and he hasn't the heart to face the music.

(6,960 posts)And he rationalizes his cowardice through the belief that he is morally superior to the rest of us, the rabble.
I think he sees himself as a kind of macho "philosopher-king" who could make the 'tough' decisions, therefore, his own life was too valuable to risk in say, Vietnam.
I don't wish any human being physical pain, even Cheney ... too bad he never had the same empathetic feelings for the thousands of people, Iraqis and Americans, civilian and military, young and old, who suffered (and are still suffering) and/or died in the two Iraq wars that he directed from his lofty perch.
Scared of death? Without a doubt Richard Bruce Cheney is probably one of the most inwardly frightened people on the planet.

(37,540 posts)He'd have had no second thoughts throwing children or women over the side to save his worthless hide. He's a war monger and war profiteer and his whole life has been profiting off of someone else's misery. Too bad they couldn't have transplanted a conscience to go with that heart. A Profile in Cowardice.

(4,854 posts)older yes, too old to justify life saving medical treatment - no.
To equate the will to fight for life with fear of dying is far too simplistic. To do so is the same as saying people who choose to use death with dignity laws are happy about dying.
Dick Cheney has more money than God and can afford to make a different choice than most of us. For most of us, economics is the biggest part of the equation. But even with more money than God there is always that balance between prolonging our life and prolonging our death.

(19,705 posts)list. His wait time was allegedly 2 months (I heard it on MSNBC yesterday).
After the decision for transplantation is made, your name will be added to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and California Transplant Donor Network (CTDN) waiting lists and you will receive a beeper for emergency contact when a heart becomes available. We cannot predict exactly how long you will have to remain on the UNOS waiting list, but an average wait is between six months to three years because of the shortage of donor organs.

(26,549 posts)An otherwise healthy 71-year-old is fine for transplants. It's only when there's a lot of other issues that they'll consider not giving them an organ.

(16,254 posts)but she said he wouldn't go to sleep because the devil would get him. He had been sitting at the dining room table for days.
I asked her what he was afraid of and she said he was afraid the devil would get him for how he treated her mother. He knew what he'd done and knew the devil had every right to his soul, but he was terrified.
I saw a week or so later that the devil finally won. Never saw the customer again, so I wasn't able to get the rest of the story.

(816 posts)I'm a nurse who works with the elderly (greater that 75 yrs old as a rule) and frequently ask a question that is part of CMS-mandated assessment. "In the last 14 days, have you had thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of harming yourself in some way?" It is part of a depression assessment and is supposed to identify those who may be considering suicide. Many times I get yes answers to having thoughts about the being "better off dead" part because the person may be looking forward to being with Jesus or loved ones who have already died, may be miserable due to chronic disease or disability, or believe that they have just lived long enough. These people will welcome death when it comes.

(75,480 posts)I do have some apprehension about a long, painful and lingering death so I hope it's fairly rapid. However, if it must be a hard death, I think I'm mentally prepared for it too. Right now I'm disgustingly healthy and spry for my age but I know the time will come and it will be sooner rather than later.

You know you had it coming 'cause you played so rough
Back over your shoulder got an icy chill
Man, you thought you'd get away with it
Now you know you never will
Somebody, somebody
You got a feelin' somebody's following you
No one knows 'bout the times you had
You've been so evil; you know, you've been so bad
There's a devil to pay for what you put them through
And you got a feeling somebody's following you
Somebody, somebody
You got a feelin' somebody's following you
Somebody, somebody
You got a feelin' somebody's following you
There's a jack-o-lantern moon in the midnight sky
Somebody gonna live, somebody gonna die
But down in the graveyard on that old tombstone
There's a big black crow and it's callin' you home
Somebody, somebody
You got a feelin' somebody's following you
Somebody, somebody
You got a feelin' somebody's following you
Somebody
You know there's somebody
