Re-make of "Left Behind" movie being made, guess who stars in it?

Nicolas Cage.

Rapture in the Age of Hollywood: "Left Behind" Goes Balls to the Wall

If you don't think religion-themed films are trending, consider this: As of this past weekend, Noah, now in it's second week in theaters, has brought in more than $72 million at the box office; God's Not Dead, more than $32 million in three weeks, and Son of God, more than $58 million in its sixth week in theaters.
Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins are no dummies. And neither is Paul Lalonde. They understand that the first attempts at turning LaHaye and Jenkins' mega-best-selling Left Behind series of apocalyptic novels into a film franchise fell flat. Although three Left Behind films were made, there was little interest -- except amongst the most enthusiastic End Timers -- little buzz generated within the filmmaking community, and not much doing at the box office.

Now, in the spirit of "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again," LaHaye, Jenkins and Lalonde have garnered a multi-million dollar budget, and plucked a box-office legend for the lead role, and are poised to take full advantage of the latest flood of religion-themed films.

(snip)

How "mystical or shuddery" will the rebooted Left Behind film be? While it is no guarantee of box office success, the rebooted Left Behind is scheduled for release in some 1800 theaters nationwide on October 3. The rapture-themed film stars Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage, as well as Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson and Jordin Sparks. Vic Armstrong, the stunt coordinator for such action films Thor, The Amazing Spider-Man and War of the Worlds, directs the film, which was shot this past summer in Louisiana.

Next week, "Heaven is for Real" premiers. I would imagine that it won't make 95 million dollars like Captain America did. Studios will make movies on different genres until they stop making money. I noticed that different genres are cyclical too. For example, action may be "hot" for a few years and then suddenly nobody goes.....The Hunger Games did well, but many of the "copies" have failed. It all depends on interest and timing. This year "religious" films are hot, but next year not a soul will attend. Who knows....

You never know what the fates of Hollywood will send a so-called star. While the atheists get sent to hell in the plot, Cage is sent to Hollywood oblivion for acting in a Biblical literalist's story, and not a very good one at that.

What makes LaHaye and Jenkins think a reboot will do any better than the first go around? Talk about God delusions!

What do they think this is? Star Trek?

But the end times folks are always claiming Biblical authority, quoting chapter and verse for all their pronouncements and predictions. Jack van Impe, and all the rest of them. They use Biblical literalism as an excuse for their Biblical ventriloquist dummy.

It's the same with all the other Christian fundies, whether it's end times, second coming, lock up the atheists, prayer in schools, women/gays/blacks are inferior, USA is a Christian country, science is evil, etc.

It's always because the Bible tells them so. At least that's what they all claim.

So I think that I will stand by my post.

Best regards.

It's a job. Slacktivist has been taking this train wreck apart. There already appears to be quite a bit of hoyay subtext in the female cast. (But considering that Slacktivist has been taking apart the books for a decade, this isn't surprising.)

I think this production may be extremely deep satire on the lines of Starship Troopers. It will definitely cry out for an MST3King.

He outbid Dicaprio on the dinosaur skull -

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/oct/28/nicolas-cage-dinosaur-skull-illegal-imported

The dinosaur skull bought by actor Nicolas Cage after he outbid fellow A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio could now return to bite him where it hurts, after it is apparently part of a criminal inquiry into illegally imported fossil remains, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Cage paid $276,000 for a Tyrannosaurus bataar skull in July 2007, which the Sunday Telegraph claimed saw him locked in an "intense" auction battle with DiCaprio. Now the paper has followed up their story by saying they have discovered the skull was provided to auctioneers IM Chait by Eric Prokopi, a "commercial paleontologist" who recently pleaded guilty to conspiring to import illegally obtained fossils from Mongolia.

However, he's had a few duds so he's not going to be that big a draw.

What they need are real writers who will take the pap written at about a fourth grade level and turn it into a script.

LeHaye, unfortunately, will want his perfect novels done the way they were written, so if he gets his way, this one will bomb too.

(and Muslims in some Arab nations) are giving to Noah. I want to go watch it.

Also it looks like it is far more loyal to the Bible story than these asshats admit to.

Though they did take some freedoms. Everybody was quiet during the flood until the dove found dry land. That makes for lousy story telling.

And the Noah the vegetarian, yup before the flood we pretty much were. But the fundies have blown gaskets and forced the movie to have disclaimers. I suspect more than a few pretty agnostic people (like myself) added it to the movies to watch list just to piss them off.

due to being raised with Rapture theories, I hate this news.

As a child, in my single-digit years, I was forced to watch movies like "A Thief In The Night" and such.

As a small child with insecurity issues, this messed me up royally.

I believed the doctrine, but never had enough self-worth to believe I would be one of the raptured.

I would be left alone in the Beast-ruled world, forced to take the Mark, or be beheaded.

It's a horrible, horrible theory and I'm deeply disappointed that people who should know better would be involved with such a project.

How many idiotic, fundie parents (like my own) are going to take their young children to see this new movie?

I'm betting: quite a few.

I weep for those children.

So, I was raised with Calvinist doctrine (the total depravity of man - you are intrinsically a bad person) from my dad's tradition, and all the Rapture, Tribulation, speaking in tongues stuff on my mom's.

It makes for a scary jambalaya, let me tell you.....

I had a similar experience with those cheesy films. I remember them showing all three movies of that series in church when I was growing up. Parents brought kids as young as three and four to watch it and I may have been about eight or nine when I first saw them. It was very traumatizing and that was the point.

I remember one scene in particular when they marched adults and a small child holding a red balloon out to the guillotine because they would not take the mark. They wanted to scare the adults and children into accepting Jesus as their savior and usually had success at the end of the showings when they made the call. A lot of those who went forward were kids.

The only difference that I see here is that people will have to pay to go and see the series in the movie theaters.

It is abusive and manipulative and they know that. to you as well. I really feel for anyone who went through that and are still going through it. IOW how manipulating people to come to Jesus out of fear instead of true and genuine emotion and faith was a good way to recruit souls.

I'm no longer a part of that world and, for me, my religious beliefs are private and should not be forced on anyone else. It took me a long time to undo some of the damage that was done mentally and emotionally when I went to that church and school.
