Guess Who Compared Tom Hanks to a Nazi Propagandist?

By Julie Miller

Last week, the very foundation of the Tom Hanks Fan Club, better known as the whole wide world, was briefly shaken when a conservative civil-rights group unearthed grainy video footage of Hanks M.C.’ing a 2003 high-school fund-raiser during which a fellow parent showed up in blackface. The actor handled the awkward and impromptu situation in the most Tom Hanks–ian way possible, by affably joking, “Ladies and gentlemen, a celebrity in our midst. Who would have thought that Bill O’Reilly would join us?” And then presumably scouring the auditorium for a golden retriever to pet, Meg Ryan to kiss, or an Oscar to accept. Now that l’Affaire Blackface has passed, however, someone is calling out our most liked movie star and comparing him to, of all things, a Nazi propagandist. Can you identify the distinguished progenitor of such a comparison?

If you guessed Glenn Beck, talk-radio pundit and former chalkboard-scribbling enthusiast, you are correct. Yesterday, the conservative personality compared Hanks’s contributions to a forthcoming campaign video for President Obama, a 17-minute documentary called The Road We’ve Traveled, to the work of career Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl.

“Tom Hanks, you should be proud of the work you’ve done in this propaganda film,” Beck said about the star of such controversial titles as Sleepless in Seattle, The Polar Express, and, worst of all, Toy Story. “What was the name of that propaganda artist for Hitler? . . . Her name is Leni Riefenstahl. Tom . . . seriously, you made a great movie and it will go down in history much like Riefenstahl’s work did and I think that’s great, and congratulations on that and best of luck to you in the future.”

But the single best comment to the actor, who has enjoyed a successful 30+ year career in Hollywood, came at the end of Beck’s tirade: “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” If Tom Hanks can survive Larry Crowne, he can survive a Nazi-propagandist comparison by walking buzz cut Glenn Beck.

But you clearly don't have the expertise and acumen of Glenn (the extra "n" stands for "knowledge"!) Beck, famed commentator and no doubt experienced military veteran of unparalleled, uh, experience, even if it has occurred only in his own imagination.

Glenn beck, who has often been widely compared to Joseph Goebels for his heated party line rhetoric, sees Nazis in our midst.

Next he'll pick a fight with some other benign celebrity, such as Rachael Ray.

the most famous one is Reagan's "Morning in America", and most if not all presidential nominees has made one of them. Also, it's very common for them to be compared to Leni Riefenstahl.

I mean, if the left isn't "sufficiently" outraged at EVERY "black-on-black" violence, then the "left" are hypocrites and opportunistic racists. But if the righties aren't outraged about any post-uturine fetus being killed ... well, that's okay. In fact, let's kill a bunch of "post-uterine fetuses" (read: criminals who could be cleared by DNA testing but it would be inconvenient to the officeholders) ...
