General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf drugs like marijuana are ever legalized, who should supply them?
Should the government regulate the production of the drugs, or should customers just continue to get them from where they got them pre-legalization? Should certain drugs, like heroin, require a prescription?

(5,169 posts)Literally so moldy you can see the fuzz. It gets that way because the jackass adds water to bump up the weight.
True, he shouldn't go to jail for selling pot, but should he go to jail for selling a dangerous product at a fraudulent weight?

(11,101 posts)If I mix ground coffee with potting soil I would be liable for damages and if it and if it violates regulation I should be fined and if it constitutes a crime for fraud I should be prosecuted. One of the big problems with a black market in general is that you can't sue someone for bad pot or call the cops when someone rips you off. That's why violence during prohibition was through the roof. Disputes had to be settled with violence. The same is true for the black market for some drugs we have today.

(5,169 posts)If you don't know what you are doing, you MIGHT be able to grow some leafy ditch weed, but nothing good enough to have any real medicinal value.
Legalize SAFE pot, and set up systems where people can have it tested for molds, fungi, pesticides, and other harmful impurities.
Remember, even if marijuana itself is relatively healthy, the crap in it and on it can be bad for you.

I can deal with Uncel Jack.
No reason why marijuana should be treated any differently.

(3,539 posts)It's a weed. In some parts of the country It grows wild.
Not here. Here we have wild asparagus growing in irrigation ditches.
Darn, just about time to go gather. Asparagus that is.
Not saying this would be the best solution but let's just try it on for size.
Let the 'gobument' do it.
We already have an FDA. This could insure potency and quality.
Like cigarettes and alcohol it would provide tax revenue.
Lord knows many communities could use a bit extra money.
As an added plus, regulating it on a federal, state or even local level would eliminate some of the nastiness.
Or we could let folk just go gather. Taxing/profeting only if local conditions did not provide for growth.
Thanks for reminding me. Time to get out the waders and wander around irrigation ditches.
For Asparagus that is.

(4,452 posts)You can make enough for your personal consumption regarding marijuana. For those that can't or won't grow their own, regulate and tax. For all those other drugs that require processing, tax, regulate and control costs.
The primary goals should be to let people do what they would anyway an keep the profits out of criminal enterprises as well as generating income to cover the regulation, enforcement, and treatment for abuse.
My grandfather used to make his own hooch all during prohibition. Most of the yard were grape vines and raspberry bushes. Those and the dandelions were used for wine. Since he preferred his whiskey, he had a small still in the garage and would get his mash from the local farmers so long as there was some quid pro quo.
