General Discussion

Just had a guest on that wants to "experiment" with social systems and states that out of past experiments a single shining success was the NYPD's "broken window" enforcement model. Got that-it works and Dylan thinks that's great...
What was not discussed was that the "experiment" achieves it's success by blatant violations of due process and infringement on civil rights. An earlier post today points out that NYC convicted 22,000 people on the basis of a law found unconstitutional years before. My son was beaten and arrested for filming ANOTHER arrest. He was denied bail on recognizance when he refused a "voluntary" iris scan-essentially an illegal act of raising bail based on something other than risk of flight.
What Broken Windows truly is, is giving police the right to use fascist thugs in illegal detention and extra-legal beatings and torture. It works, Dylan? Of course it does-Nazi Germany was one MF of a crime free place. When a misplaced word can get you shipped off to a death camp even murderers are polite and politically correct.
But Dylan, I won't just settle for a country that works-I'd also like it to resemble America.

(4,017 posts)I wrote D.R. off a long time ago.
thanks for that info. I am sort of hot and cold on Ratigan - first watching him I couldn't stand his guts but sort of got used to his consistent undertone of 'the sky is falling' and there are terrible, terrible things going down folks. I can relate to that so I gave him another chance.
but how could he possibly think Broken Windows is okay and still be consistent with his 'government is too powerful and secretive' schtick? strange indeed.

(2,479 posts)Is that he's aware and talks a lot about the government being bought and paid for by the rich, and corporations. Sometimes he seems a big lukewarm on other things, wishy-washy, but that one over-riding thing makes it worth it for him to be on the tube I guess.
It is the root, the core problem with everything in our government.

(24,096 posts)for fear of being called woo woo or something ridiculous. I do find him interesting with that differential from all the others who seem to have the same topic on all their shows each day.
but still, I can see someone getting really ticked at him for what this OP is about, and swear off him

(17,609 posts)he pretends then lets a CON like Sen. Coburn come on his show and preach about what is wrong with the President and the left and how the country needs leadership which only he can give.
Dylan precedes to tell him he is right and that the majority of the country agrees with him. I jumped up and screamed well kiss my ass!

(23,664 posts)That broken window bullshit was the brainchild of 9iulliani's NYPD and was used for years as a tool to harass minorities and poor people. Anybody who espouses smaller less obtrusive government like Ratigan does should be violently opposed to it.
But Ratigan doesn't give a rats ass. He is in favor of anything he can use to get on his soapbox and keep his face in front of the public.

(226 posts)I'm now into Martin Bashir. You have to love the guy. He doesn't let the Repugs get away with anything.

(1,663 posts)and, unlike Ratigan, fast on his feet and smart. I wish they'd switch places so I could watch Bashir more , , , or he could take Tweety's place so I wouldn't have to switch to Jeopardy.

(17,609 posts)and he never lets the CONS get away with lies without a follow up.\
Bashir leads into Dylan's show and there is usually and uncomfortable look to the throw off to Dylan because Dylan is trying so hard to hide his anger about what he has just heard on Bashir's show.
Dylan then goes into his little charade about how he is for the people and the Dems and the President aren't,then lets the CONS sit there and speechify and tell us we have to cut the spending, except for Dylan and his wall street buddies..

(6,960 posts)I just replayed this segment of the Dylan Ratigan Show.
The guest did not mention NYPD.
Ratigan expressed his support for "hotspotting" as a problem-solving technique -- not "Broken Windows."

I understand some folks here at DU don't approve of Ratigan because he is not a one hundred percent cheerleader for Pres. Obama and the Democratic Party.
But Ratigan is a fierce fighter for the repeal of Citizens United; has disdain for most of the so-called "free trade" treaties of the past thirty years; wonders daily why there have not been prosecutions of Wall Street bankers ... etc.
In fact, Ratigan did his whole first segment today basically in favor of the U.S. getting out of Afghanistan sooner than eleven years from now.
Don't like him if you want -- but at least describe accurately what you are supposedly complaining about.

"Fuck Dylan Ratigan" - you're "done with him" because he had on a guest with whom you disagree, and he didn't say exactly what you wanted him to say.
I see at least one of these threads per week and they're always transparent. Ratigan's crime is that he criticizes Obama's mishandling of the economy, he's not a fan of neoliberalism and he won't play along for access.

So, it is a distortion in the OP to charge that the guest was advocating for that specific program -- he wasn't.

(8,976 posts)But he DID SPECIFICALLY pronounce the Broken Windows policy as a shining success and Dylan never said word one against it-Did he??? Dylan poses as a left leaning intellect but he bought his guest's bullshit without protest. If you support fascism because it "solves" something, guess what?
Is THAT accurate enough for you?

(50,627 posts)He's so smug. I tried to watch him even though he irritated the hell out of me but when he went OTT on one of his guests when she referred to his 'to the right' view of issues, it was an obvious case of "the (gentleman) dost protest too much". He raked her over the coals far longer than one would expect for even suggesting he shows his political side on his show, which he does show, imo. The man has anger issues at times, imo.
butterfly77
(17,609 posts)he tries to hide it but, looks like he is about to explode when someone on the left is giving their opinion on whatever subject.
Now,when it is the republiCONS turn he lets them give a speech about how the country should be run which is usually what was going on during the bush years.
Dylan never says a word the other day I was wondering if he had left the set.

(1,362 posts)sell WMD lies, repeat any propaganda they think will sell and will whore themselves for whatever their "bosses" tell them to.
The MSM has zero credibility and hasn't for years. Take a serious look at everyone there and what they are selling, they are selling emotional responses not rational debate, which is the very definition of propaganda.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda
---As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of political warfare.---

(39,451 posts)Martin Bashir (my future husband) hands over the program to DR.
It's hilarious!
Bashir is an outspoken lefty, and ends his show with giving a piece of his mind - and then it goes right to DR.
Then I change the channel.
