3,000 Pages of Hillary Clinton's Emails Were Just Released — Many Heavily Redacted

June 30, 2015 | 9:35 pm

At 9pm ET Tuesday evening, the State Department released about 3,000 pages of Hillary Clinton's emails, which cover much of 2009, her first year as Secretary of State.

The emails refer to a wide-range of topics and hot-button issues Clinton, currently the Democratic presidential frontrunner, confronted that year, including Afghanistan, Iran, and the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. Despite the fact that Clinton said she wanted "all of her emails" released "as soon as possible," the State Department redacted her emails and applied numerous exemptions under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) justifying the withholding of certain information.

The State Department redacted large swaths of information in the emails, often citing a privacy exemption and an exemption that protects the so-called "deliberative process." The emails also contained redactions in which the State Department withheld information citing a national security exemption, which calls into question Clinton's assertion that she did not send classified information over her private email server.

Last weekend, Daniel Metcalfe, a former top FOIA official at the Justice Department, told VICE News that if State withheld any information from Clinton's emails citing national security or "intelligence sources and methods," it would "undermine her judgment" and would be a "credibility weakness" for Clinton.

One of the emails indicates that Senator Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, had contacted Clinton two months before the Bank of New York entered into a multibillion-dollar settlement with the Russian government to "talk to her about the problem the bank of ny is having in Russia."

Why are you challenging them? They just won TWO PEABODY AWARDS FOR REPORTS IN 2014; here are the criteria for Peabody awards:

Does this story matter? Is it a story that needs telling? Does it inform us as citizens or help us empathize with one another?"

These are the questions that the Peabody board asks of the stories it considers for the prestigious Peabody Award. It appears that in the case of two of VICE News's 2014 documentaries, The Islamic State and Last Chance High, the answer was, "yes."

It is an award that means a lot to us at VICE News, because it celebrates that with which we are most obsessed: storytelling.

I've never heard of this organization - went to its home page and found this statement:
VICE News is an international news organization created by and for a connected generation. We provide an unvarnished look at some of the most important events of our time, highlight under-reported stories from around the globe, and get to the heart of the matter with reporters who call it like they see it.

The 3 featured stories were: Leaked NSA Reports Allegedly Show the US Spied on France's Last Three Presidents
Scandinavian Ships Rescue Nearly 1,000 Migrants in 24 Hours
Migrants Stranded on Kos: Europe or Die

They publish in English, Spanish & French.

It's one thing to challenge someone quoting FreeRepublic. But lately, if a certain candidate's supporters can not defend her on the facts, they ignore the facts and attack the messenger.

4. They have an HBO series and it is excellent

Their HBO series is similar to a 60 Minutes but so much better, it is actual investigative journalism. They have landed interviews with everyone from Barack Obama to ISIS terror leaders and international drug lords. It is probably the best news show on television and HBO recently announced a major expansion of the series to include a five night per week evening news broadcast which will have them competing with the big networks.

Vice is a very serious news source already and they are rapidly expanding, expect them to become one of the most cited news sources in the world in the near future.

9. My bad, I thought you were being sarcastic.

I haven't come across any links to them in the past and your description of them as "the most legitimate news organization in the World", without any qualifying comments struck me as over the top, i.e., sarcastic. Basically saying more legitimate than Reuters, AP, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc. It's hard to tell around DU these days.

However, you did motivate me to research them, as per my comments, and they are impressive.
I added them to my list of international news sources. Thank you for that.
Again, apologies.
