Lafayette gunman who killed two women during Trainwreck aired radical anti-feminist views on local TV
The gunman who killed two women and wounded nine other moviegoers in Louisiana had a long history of anger and violence toward women.
John Russell Houser, who fatally shot himself after police thwarted his apparent escape plans, appeared at least a dozen times on a television talk show in the 1990s, where he would make outrageous comments against women and feminism.
Whatever he wanted to talk about, it would generate calls, said Calvin Floyd, who hosted WLTZ-TVs Rise & Shine program. He was anti-abortion. The best I can recall, Rusty had an issue with feminine rights. He was opposed to women having a say in anything. You could talk with him a few minutes, and you would know he had a high IQ but there was a lot missing with him.
The 59-year-old Houser fired off 13 rounds, pausing to reload, during a screening Thursday evening of Trainwreck, a comedy starring Amy Schumer that has been variously praised and criticized for its feminist themes about sexuality.
. . . . .
The association I had with him was for entertainment, Floyd said. He was very entertaining. He made for good TV and when it was over, you would leave shaking your head. He described Houser, who posted an article on Facebook about limiting womens participation in church, as an angry and radical person.

(42,661 posts)There's a big part of the problem right there. Did Calvin Floyd or anyone associated with that show ever ask, "Can we find someone who's not quite so angry and radical?"

You have no idea what "Rise and Shine" on Columbus TV was like. None.
It came on at 5 am. As a college at Auburn in the 90s sometimes I was still up to see it.
I can't do it credit, but basically, Calvin and a couple of other people would sit at a set that was a kitchen. They were nice, southern country people. They sat around the kitchen table. They had some sponsers like RC cola and they'd talk about RC a while and how good it was, and mention golden flake or some local garage where the guy was a good mechanic.
They would read the newspaper. No you have to remember that the internet was brand new. We had it at the university but most people didn''t. Some people had like AOL or compuserve, the world wide web was brand new. So they'd set at the table and Calvin would read the day's newspaper. And they had a phone line where people could call in. And they had like regular callers.
"Caaalvin, I was listening to you read that story in the paper and...."
And then the other guy would talk a while about how the fishing is and what good bait is right now, and some folks would call in and tell how the fishing was at so-and-so and what kind of bait they used. And sometimes guests would come on and show the fish they caught or something like that.
Then Calvin might read the paper some more, maybe the sports section, and there would be calls about the Dawgs this and bama that and how Auburn was superior to either in every way, that sort of thing.
I know that they didn't have a delay in the phone calls or seem to screen them because sometimes they'd get crank calls. Sometimes they would get that they were cranks (like the callers would cuss or something) and cut them off but usually they didn't get it and it could be funny because people would sort of troll them, before trolling was a thing. And sometimes they would have guests come on like Rusty so that would people would call in.
It was surreal, and I think Calvin was more self-aware than he let on.
I found this on youtube. Looks like they got a kitchen upgrade but it pretty much illustrates everything I was trying to say, don't watch it if you are going to get offended and don't blame me.

(21,691 posts)The anti-woman rants have been remembered.
He went to a "women's" movie - a rom-com - written by and starring a woman with outspoken, unconventional views on traditional female sexuality, and shot the first two women he could.
But naw. It's about anything else. Not the poisonous hate of women that isn't that hard to find.

(23,272 posts)this guy hated women.
He purposefully chose a rom-com which would be filled with women theater goers and then only killed women.
Hate crime.

(42,001 posts)It was clearly a hate crime against women, and should be called that. He was clinically mentally ill, but that's the form his illness took.

....yawn
When DU feminists point out that DUers are oblivious to women's issues, this thread is just another example.
A sad kick...

This was UNDOUBTEDLY a Hate Crime! Violence against women is ALWAYS subordinated and minimized because that's it's sanction in just about every society on earth.
I am literally sick to stomach at what that bigot did. Lord knows I don't want a police state, but I do want an end to the Rusty Houser's of the world.
What could he fear, to hate so much?

(2,065 posts)women in the street, many do murder and beat the women in their lives. And many more men simply believe that women exist for their entertainment and sexual gratification, regardless of the age of either party. It amazes me how normalized the idea that women are second class citizens is in our society.

(12,051 posts)It jumped out at me that this guy was your garden-variety misogynist who chose a rom-com so he could kill mainly women. Now, I have no idea what sex the injured people are, but to me it's telling that he sat behind two women and killed them both. After he did that, he may have had to just shoot at anybody who came at him regardless of their sex, but he made sure he killed women first.
You are entirely right that his ideas are not unusual in this society. Men like this have a 'predator' view of themselves, and everyone else (but ESPECIALLY women) are the 'prey.' If the 'prey' turns around and bites back through legal means or physical means, these men feel like the ordained order of the universe has been violated. However, even in this universe, prey always gets to fight back; it irritates guys like this that the prey gets to fight back and win occasionally. My bet is that he could be a malignant narcissist, but those kind of people do well in this society generally so he never got put in the padded room he deserved.
