(3,732 posts)Homeland Security is monitoring the wrong people.
It bugs me how the rightwing constantly cuts off survival needs for people that really ought to start a revolution for the people who lose access to food and housing. These are the people that the Rightwing always demands to get "tough on crime" against and needs to call out the National Guard against their protests (because they are "rioting" .
Yet every time they feel a cultural "threat", the far right thinks they have the "liberty" to pull out guns, cry "revolution", and start mowing down random civilians.
What is wrong with this picture?
By giving in to NRA whining, we are putting guns in the hands of these hypocrites who want to hog the capacity of revolution for themselves. They want the guns to put down the "riots" of the poor people they don't want to feed. They regard the "right to bear arms" as prudent self defense against the 47% takers who are threatening to implement redistribution via class warfare. The confederate flag marked their territory, but now it's been taken down. Equality means more take-aways, so the takers can expect to be met with vigorous armed resistance.
People who stand for decent government regulation, public infrastructure, civic space, the common good, community benefits, and any sort of public sphere need to STOP PUTTING UP WITH THIS NONSENSE.
Individual liberty is all-American, but it stops at the point of interfering with the liberty of others, harming others, and undermining good governance of your City, State, or Country - in other words, the Commons which we all must maintain together. Get the guns the hell out of the Commons.

(13,081 posts)A couple of weeks ago. At about the same time, a similar guy in Las Vegas detonated a bomb in a homeless camp because "he was sick and tired of the homeless people." No one killed, but two men each lost an arm. The guy in Louisiana, Dylan Roof...right wing nut jobs have always been a problem, but lately there seems to be a zeitgeist. I'd really like our media to connect some dots and make clear that the lunatics on the right are essentially terrorizing the nation.

(8,830 posts)I live in the city and the only thing that I have seen lately was a firework (small explosion) that injured one person.

(13,081 posts)I know of the case from an attorney at the court house. I'll see if I can't get more details on Monday.

(8,830 posts)Not something that would normally be kept from the press. I'd appreciate what detail you can get, because I certainly don't like the direction this seems to be taking. Thanks.

(13,081 posts)Although most of it isn't available online. I suspect there's no news stories on it because A) Vegas news doesn't actually do "news," because that would require effort; they mostly just recap press releases and human interest stories, and B) because no one gives a shit about homeless people anyway.
So, to recap what I know and what is alleged:
There are two suspects, an older homeless guy who was previously thrown out of the camp. I don't know his name.
A younger guy (22) named Daniel White paid the older guy to distract the people in the encampment.
Daniel White allegedly conceived and built the bomb, or at least that's the accusation.
You can look him up by googling "CCDC inmate search" and typing in his name; he's not in Blackstone yet.
His case number is 15F10912X
His inmate number is 02863368
He is being held on 100,000 dollar bail.
The charges are: Using Explosives to damage/destroy property, people inside
And
Battery with use of a deadly weapon
His next hearing is the prelim, Justice Court (the last stop before trial District Court) on August 6th. I'd go just out of curiosity, but I think I have a class that day.
Daniel placed the pipe bomb in a tent, which caused severe facial disfigurement to one victim and cost another person his arm.
It happened in a vacant lot somewhere around 4750 Nellis, between Cheyenne and Nellis
He is alleged to have said that he "was sick of looking at all those homeless people."
There's a small chance the Feds will pick it up because it was a bombing, but since it was a homeless guy's tent and not an actual building, probably not.
I hope that was helpful; I'm not sure if I know anything beyond this, but the evidence should be clearly laid out at the upcoming preliminary hearing.

(8,830 posts)A friend of mine is in pretty tight with some of the local news types; maybe if they drop the hint that people are aware of this, they will discover that it is newsworthy.
Shameful that it has been brushed aside.

(53,339 posts)Initial report said man did not shoot, subsequent reports say man was sitting in front of a CitiBank branch and fired 4 shots into the ground and was sitting calmly with the weapon between his knees when officers arrived and ordered him to drop the weapon, with no reponse. Then the man moved his arm and was fatally shot by police.
Police used robot to remove 3 packages from suspect's body and have detonated one, so far.
Per local coverage on ABC7.

(53,339 posts)The man never pointed his handgun at anyone. After firing shots into the ground, he sat calmly with the gun between his knees, waiting for police to arrive. Police opened fire when the man moved his arm, but he never actually pointed the weapon at them.
