Standing too close to the reactor, or something. Those things weren't always as well shielded as they might have been. Better than the Russians...but still.

If that was the case, his departure from the USN (he really didn't want to leave--he probably would have made Admiral lickity-split, he was a good officer) to run the peanut farm might have spared him to take his place in our nation's history.

Because the body naturally slows down a great many processes as it ages, many forms of cancer grow more slowly in elderly individuals. In such a case, good palliative care, by adding to comfort and resilience, can prolong life more effectively than aggressive, system-disrupting treatments.

Holding Mr. Carter and his family in the Light, and hoping for the best possible journey for them from here.

Unfortunately, too many oncologists see themselves as knights on white stallions, leading the charge against the demon cancer. They lose sight of their patients completely.

With some cancers, people live longer on palliative care than with aggressive treatment. I think that would be likely in Carter's case.

Although the surgery was for a mass on his liver, they don't yet know the origin. But his father, brother and 2 sisters died of pancreatic. He was the only non-smoker among them.

http://news.yahoo.com/jimmy-carter-says-cancer-revealed-recent-surgery-203826345.html
The statement makes clear that Carter's cancer is widely spread, but not where it originated, or even if that is known at this point. The liver is often a place where cancer spreads and less commonly is the primary source of it. It said further information will be provided when more facts are known, "possibly next week."

I am doing a Presidential bucket list and am trying to visit all the Presidents homes, libraries, museums or gravesites. I decided earlier this summer that as President Carter was 90 I needed to get his done asap. In June drove all the way from Indy to Plains to hear him speak at his church. It was amazing to see how sharp and funny he still is and he taught quite a Sunday school class.

If you stay through the service, you can have your picture taken with him and Roslyn. I was the only African-American there that day and as it was the Sunday after the Charleston Massacre, he took note of me. He invited me to stand next to him and even put his hand on my back as he welcomed me. Now hearing this news, I am greatly saddened but appreciative that I was able to have that experience. If he continues to be able to teach Sunday school classes, I would encourage everyone to try and go and let him know how much he is appreciated. This is the link to his church speaking schedule; http://www.mbcplains.org/?page_id=212
