(7,231 posts)without even receiving treatment (he refused - he wanted to be reunited with his late wife; they had been married for 72 years). Cancers do not grow very quickly at high ages, which is a blessing of sorts.

(135,425 posts)Standing too close to the reactor, or something. Those things weren't always as well shielded as they might have been. Better than the Russians...but still.
If that was the case, his departure from the USN (he really didn't want to leave--he probably would have made Admiral lickity-split, he was a good officer) to run the peanut farm might have spared him to take his place in our nation's history.

(33,688 posts)I recently rewatched the so-called "malaise" speech (its an extra feature on the DVD of "Capitalism, A Love Story" . It was a great, thoughtful, brilliant speech.
Why didn't we LISTEN TO HIM?
MBS
(9,688 posts)But our country was not in the mood to listen, not in the mood for truth. They wanted "Morning in America", "Don't worry, be happy". And we're now paying the price for our lack of maturity.
A good, thoughtful and intelligent man, Jimmy Carter. I'm hoping for a miracle, too.

tavalon
(27,985 posts)which generally means that if that is the primary cancer, bone and brain will be the mets sites. This is not better but maybe less painful. If he can't get a cure, I want him to go gently. He definitely deserves that kindness. He's saved so many human beings in his life - in a fair world, he should get an easy out if that's the way it needs to be.
Damn it.

(111,433 posts)Given his age, I hope he's got a doctor who's smart enough to discuss palliative care with him. With palliative care, he'd have more good time.
But no, this doesn't sound good at all.
artislife
(9,497 posts)TygrBright
(20,777 posts)Because the body naturally slows down a great many processes as it ages, many forms of cancer grow more slowly in elderly individuals. In such a case, good palliative care, by adding to comfort and resilience, can prolong life more effectively than aggressive, system-disrupting treatments.
Holding Mr. Carter and his family in the Light, and hoping for the best possible journey for them from here.
sadly,

(111,433 posts)Unfortunately, too many oncologists see themselves as knights on white stallions, leading the charge against the demon cancer. They lose sight of their patients completely.
With some cancers, people live longer on palliative care than with aggressive treatment. I think that would be likely in Carter's case.
tavalon
(27,985 posts)He has the best and brightest and yes, they will do what they can and if palliative is the right path, he will get the best of that. This is one area in which I'm glad a person is at the top of the heap.

(14,881 posts)Although the surgery was for a mass on his liver, they don't yet know the origin. But his father, brother and 2 sisters died of pancreatic. He was the only non-smoker among them.
http://news.yahoo.com/jimmy-carter-says-cancer-revealed-recent-surgery-203826345.html
The statement makes clear that Carter's cancer is widely spread, but not where it originated, or even if that is known at this point. The liver is often a place where cancer spreads and less commonly is the primary source of it. It said further information will be provided when more facts are known, "possibly next week."

(96 posts)I am doing a Presidential bucket list and am trying to visit all the Presidents homes, libraries, museums or gravesites. I decided earlier this summer that as President Carter was 90 I needed to get his done asap. In June drove all the way from Indy to Plains to hear him speak at his church. It was amazing to see how sharp and funny he still is and he taught quite a Sunday school class.
If you stay through the service, you can have your picture taken with him and Roslyn. I was the only African-American there that day and as it was the Sunday after the Charleston Massacre, he took note of me. He invited me to stand next to him and even put his hand on my back as he welcomed me. Now hearing this news, I am greatly saddened but appreciative that I was able to have that experience. If he continues to be able to teach Sunday school classes, I would encourage everyone to try and go and let him know how much he is appreciated. This is the link to his church speaking schedule; http://www.mbcplains.org/?page_id=212
