http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/john-kasich-abolish-teacher-lounges"Ill tell you what the unions do, unfortunately too much of the time. Theres a constant negative comment, Theyre going to take your benefits, theyre going to take your pay,'" Kasich said. "So if I were, not president, but if I were king in America, I would abolish all teachers' lounges, where they sit together and worry about, 'Woe is us.'"

(82,849 posts)They're not too keen on that 5th Amendment (unless it's their sorry ass in the dock), and that whole 8th Amendment inconvenience they just find annoying. I wonder if Republicans respect civil rights at all?

(38,958 posts)one might point out to the Esteemed Governor Kasich that he is running for President and we don't have Kings in this country. Perhaps he missed that during his educational process. One might also point out that job dissatisfaction will still exist and people (even teachers) will find a means to communicate with one another, lounge or no lounge....
But, if he believes this will be the end all, solve all method of fixing education..... Proceed Governor....

(1,884 posts)Teaching used to be a noble profession. Then someone figured out that educated people were harder to control.
So now instead of having school from Labor Day to Memorial Day, we have school from the middle of August to the end of June. Why? So they have more time to teach to the test. It is harder to teach spun, instead of facts.

(72,036 posts)Where I work, (because of space restrictions) exhausted teachers share their room with Spanish, Art, Staff Meetings and sometimes even testing.
Many (i agree, not all) are working, prepping and yes, even taking a deep breath for a few minutes.
Just try it Mr. Kasich
Teaching is hard work at a low pay

(23,156 posts)or the management, or anything at all, they don't need lounges to congregate in to be able to complain.
Secondly, where does he expect a teacher with a bit of free time to go to wind down? The smoking area out in front of the school? The janitor's closet?

I still remember in high school how some of them smelled of smoke when they came in . . .some may miss it still.
Many students smoked then too, but not in school or on school grounds - big trouble if you did.
