The City Council gave interim City Attorney Cheran Cordell the green light to seek a court order to remove the Confederate monument in Portsmouth at Court and High streets, according to two council members.

Circuit Court Clerk Cynthia Morrison said on Wednesday that no lawsuit or petition had been filed to remove the Confederate monument.
If the city wanted a court order from a judge to remove the monument, it would have to file a lawsuit or petition first, Morrison said.
