How a rare sniffer dog was Jared Fogle's undoing
Rob Quinn, Newser Staff 6:04 p.m. EDT August 26, 2015

(NEWSER) – There are only five dogs in America trained to sniff out electronic devices, and one of them played a major role in Jared Fogle's downfall.

Bear, a 2-year-old black Labrador, was able to sniff out a thumb drive that human investigators missed during a search of the former Subway spokesman's home last month, reports NBC News, which describes Bear as a "porn-sniffing dog."

He can detect tiny memory cards easily and was trained with methods associated with "any other K-9 training, like with the narcotics or explosives or anything," his trainer tells WISH-TV.

"You get the dog used to the odor and reward them as they indicate on it."

Would hold on to incriminating evidence after the police searched you once?

Jared is not only a pervert; he's a stupid pervert.

The dog acted on a way his handler wanted to.

Dog evidence is generally garbage.

On edit: How does a thumb drive emit odors? Has it been replicated? So are the feds saying a dog gave them permission to search his house?

he found an electronic device. Did his handler pretend the dog found it instead of finding it himself?

Are you mad because a dog once found your stash or something?

Everything emits unique odors. Dogs have remarkably sensitive noses -- they can be trained to detect cancer in humans, for goodness sakes.

I get that you don't think it's fair but most of us are down with finding evidence of child porn. I'm going to assume they had a warrant unless we hear otherwise.

when warmed up. That odor becomes even more distinct when overheated or catches fire.

Anyone who has ever had a TV, amplifier, etc overheat and shit the bed knows what I'm talking about.

A dogs sense of smell as strong as it is, can probably pick up that odor when the device is cold.

Lesson learned: if one is going to store illegal content on a thumb drive, hide it inside another electronic device
and/or encrypt it.

The dog found one that was completely hidden to the naked eye.

Why is that so hard to comprehend? You wanna be Jared's lawyer?

So now anyone in Seattle reading that article that has illegal content stored on a thumb drive, is in
an 'Uh-Oh' mode right now and is either smashing it with a sledge hammer, or burying it in a ditch
miles away from their domicile.
