and her husband is a Fundie Guy (Reforming ...but, still not there yet for We Democrats) ..and so she was glad he was not there when she watched it.
She called and said..."I think I understand what You and Daddy have been talking about all these years!
My daughter, {the lovely Pragmatist)...... (if she had been old enough would have voted for Reagan) ...this Bill Maher editorial somehow moved her "Left" on the Scale to understand what we've been talking about, and even marching about (the 99% of us who CARE). She thought this was just incredible and called us to tell us about it.
She likes Obama..but, this (she said) made her wonder about where he's been going.
Here's the Bill Maher Video:

(28,784 posts)that has made the rounds among a lot of people I know - so that's a good thing.
the HONEST, honest, honest truth about these right wing attacks on Obama as a radical stem from one thing: the color of his skin.
it's a joke for anyone to try to claim he's a radical. - or it's a ploy to take away some of his ability to work on various issues.
but there's no reality behind it.
it's a sort of litmus test, to me. If someone says Obama is a radical, it's like a great big welt appears on the forehead that says "racist."

If he would switch parties though, they would love him, just as he is.

(62,325 posts)they would agree with if he was a Republican. After the election he could switch back. That would be fun.

(45 posts)If you could agree that not every crazy radical statement from either side is the sole opinion of the majority of either party then I would have to disagree with the race comment.
Sure, there are some right wing people that don't like him because he's half black. There are lots of hardcore leftist blacks that hate the "white man" but I don't believe the Democratic party overall is racist. The, what I believe to be, honest truth of it is that a majority of right wingers really just don't like his proposed policies.
Someone else says later that if Obama switched sides that " we'd) accept him as he is." That is true, if he were to understand the policies the GOP and want to put them into law, we would accept him.
I believe that if that last statement is true, then those that would accept him, truly can't despise him for being half black. I think hatred of race would be stronger than acceptance of political ideals and much harder to make a compromise, if someone were to be a true racist.
I also always found it odd that leftists weren't happy with Obama because he wasn't Left enough and GOP hated him for being too far left.
Btw, did you notice that the 2009 Stimulus numbers were in Bush's column and that Obama's numbers started at 2010? It stated that the 2009 Stimulus re-assigned to Obama, so why didn't it show in his column? And to be honest, the Democrats took over in 2006 so they had a running head start in spending numbers to include the Bush years, right?
And the only reason he isn't a "true radical" is because he hasn't been able to achieve what he had planned. If he did, then it would have been "radical" to what the norm of the time was.

(12,882 posts)You're not completely off base in your comments about racism, but your last 3 paragraphs reveal more spin than reality.
I don't doubt you find it odd that "leftists" (more often than not a pejorative used by the right) aren't happy with Obama's tack to the center while the GOP (why not the pejorative "rightwingers"?) hate him for being too far left. What I find "odd" or lacking in this comment of yours is an acknowledgement that Obama has indeed acted as a centrist while all the noise from the right about Obama being a radical leftist is just that -- noise.
FYI, the federal budget for fiscal year 2009 was passed under the Bush administration, just as FY2013 will be attributed to Obama's first term. And do you really think a significant driver of spending during the Bush administration was legislation passed in 2007-2008 by the Democratic congress and signed into law by GW Bush? If so, please identify that legislation and compare it to spending for the Prescription Drug bill crafted by the pharmaceutical industry and the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq.
Finally, please spell out for us the "true radical" plans President Obama would have put into place if only the Dems hadn't lost control of Congress. Do you think the American Jobs Act he proposed last year (which was DOA in the GOP House) is a piece of leftist radicalism? What about things over which President Obama does have control, such as appointees to his economic team (Geithner, Summers)?
You are very much in need of a reality check.

(18,184 posts)come from elected Republican politicians. Thats the difference.
But the point of Maher's rant is that Republicans keep moving the goalposts.
Republicans now not only disagree with Democrats but they also disagree with recent past versions of themselves! GW Bush, past Romney and even Reagan's actual policies are not conservative enough for them!

(37,648 posts)Exactly what has Obama done that they are so angry about? Honestly, I can't think of one thing, except that lame excuse of the mandate, WHICH WAS A REPUBLICAN IDEA TO BEGIN WITH. And the Dems seem as upset by that as anyone else.

(12,882 posts)Maher knocks several out of the park, but when he states the Democrats don't have a plan he apparently forgot about President Obama's American Jobs Act, which, of course, was DOA in the GOP-controlled House:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/09/08/fact-sheet-american-jobs-act
Whether or not you agree with everything in that plan, the point here is that this Democratic president has one.
The Republican plan is obstruct, obstruct, obstruct, and prevent economic recovery as much as possible so they can blame it on Obama.

(3 posts)This website discourages use of inflammatory language, bigotry and in general "hate" speech; yet, it is surprisingly very common in most posters comments, (as long as they are in agreement with the "group think" on this site); including this clip from Bill Maher who wishes a fellow American jailed or dead. I'm not worried that this will even get read or be around for long because to even raise a question in opposition, apparently to the "group think" on this site, will get you censored and removed from the thread. It is with irony then that this site calls itself the "Democratic Underground" when to have a dissenting view makes you "public enemy number 1" and freedom of speech or any type of meaningful discussion is virtually non-existent. Good day to all of you angry, ill-informed people out there who actually consider Bill Maher a credible source of information.
