IMO, we're fast approaching the same situation again -- gathering into two groups, the gap between them widening, and confronting each other with increased hostility. It's hard to say what a 'resolution' of the current situation could be. In the 1860s, the form it took led to a national trauma that defined this nation as much as anything ever has.
The form is different now, but the division is starting to be a grim reality that doesn't seem likely to resolve itself pleasantly. with everyone smiling at each other and ambling back home to watch game shows on TV. It's hard to see where it will go, but it has the potential of being another redefinition of who we are and where we're going. I hope it just floats away, but I don't think it will. Anyhow, just my opinion.

The Republican party is in chaos and that will help.

(29 posts)That new 'majority rule' may have to be enforced, and the forms that could take and the reaction to it could very well be the national redefinition I'm talking about. That new minority might not accept a government that would impose that on them, and the imposition will not be pleasant or even peaceful, IMO.

(8,109 posts)Equal protection under the law? Fair elections where every vote counts? An end to unjustified killings of black people by law enforcement?
What terrible things will the new majority impose on the old "majority" (i.e. straight white men) that will cause this reaction that will be neither "pleasant or even peaceful"?

(17,320 posts)The Republicans were the Party the hurried the process right into a war. They knew that the slavery
issue was the perfect weapon to divide the country quickly. The solution to our current impeding terrible schism is in the hands of (1) the primary voters then (2) the Presidential voters and last (3) whoever is elected President.
This time, Civil War will not be an option fortunately. However, I see no simple options for the American people at this point.
The damage already done by the megalomaniac Trump. If he loses the primary, the damage will be somewhat contained. That would leave us with some very poor choices on the Republican side.
And wile we have two sane and capable candidates on the Democratic side, no President since Lincoln
has had to try to repair such a massive "ideological schism".
Folks, this is what happens to a Government that has been dominated for years but incompetent,
greedy and dishonest leaders who are bought by a criminal enterprise. They, with our approval, have driven us into the ground. The only ones in control are the oligarchical unbridled Capitalists who are VERY organized and well funded.
The choices come down to the two Democratic candidates, both sane and experienced. In light of the fact that the super rich capitalist are driving this evil process, it would seem that Sen. Sanders would be the better choice since Sec. Clinton has long established financial ties with the big money people, ties that would be difficult, if not dangerous, for her to sever.
