And now for something completely different....Boaty McBoatface could be the name of £200m research vessel after public vote
When NERC opened up suggestions to name their new ship, little could they have predicted what the frontrunner would be
The official name of a new multi-million pound research vessel could be the RSS Boaty McBoatface after the internet was asked for its ideas.
When the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) opened up suggestions to name their new ship, little could they have predicted what the frontrunner would be.
Steaming ahead of its rivals, RSS Boaty McBoatface is outstripping the likes of Endeavour, Henry Worsley, David Attenborough, Falcon and many more offerings.

When thinking of submissions, they advised: We're looking for an inspirational name that exemplifies the work it will do.

(5,528 posts)the company I was sailing with got a new (to them, but otherwise well used) ship to carry bulk grains and ores. They had a fleetwide contest to name the ship. The second mate on my ship entered the name "Cornhauler."
Needless to say, the company didn't go with it.
I wound up working on it for four years. It was a beast, but since it was in the tramp trades we wound up going to some interesting places. Great people as well, and that makes up for lots of other annoying stuff.

(5,141 posts)I hope they go with it. I often use similar names for people (one of my BFF's is referred to as Lady "Slutty" McSluttington) so this makes me laugh out load!!
