(99,716 posts)If he nominated someone in the mold of Anthony Kennedy or Sandra Day O'Connor I would vigorously support him or her.

(17,219 posts)I confess that, a few exceptions aside, the Democrats in the Senate do not fill me with a sense of confidence.
And once Mr Gorsuch is approved, Justice Ginsberg may decide to throw in the towel. It's not like she hasn't wanted to retire for some time.

Hell, I saw Justice Stevens at a Cubs World Series game.
*Ditto for Breyer and Kennedy.

(31,261 posts)Along with Gingsburg, Roe v Wade can't be overturned. My concern is the three Roe v Wade Justices that are in their mid eighties. Trump could put the Court out of reach if McConnell eliminates the 60 vote rule.

(11,804 posts)Then again they might want to try and force Democrats to break ranks? I don't know how it will go. Gorsuch is a pretty shitty candidate - but he is about as middle of the road as this President and Congress is likely to put up; it'd be better if Trump put up someone who was clearly a total Loon. As it is Gorsuch will probably get the appointment eventually, but I do think it will take the Nuclear option to make that happen.

(99,716 posts)If they use the nuclear option they will get Gorsuch however the rules of the Senate are so arcane that members can gum up the works on even the most trivial legislation. The Democrats could retaliate by making the Senate unworkable.
An example is the Senate currently not being able to vote on Cabinet appointees because there is no quorum at the committee level. What happens if we do that on ordinary legislation in retaliation for taking away the filibuster ?
Reminds me of the scene in Scarface where Tony Montana says "you want a war. you got it."

(31,261 posts)Option is done, Trump can appoint at least three more Justices before 2020. Face it, outside of some stunning changes, we are unlikely to retake the Senate in 2018, we need to hold 20 seats and take 3 seats from the 8 republicans that are up for reelection - a tall order. If McConnell wants to pack Courts with extreme rightwingers for the next two generations, he loses nothing by eliminating the 60 vote rule, and actually makes his goal easier.

(6,843 posts)Let them govern. We can stand in solidarity as the opposition. Tie them to their crazy orange god. This is not going to end well and the further away from it we are, the better.

(31,261 posts)We have bad Senate math in 2018, to win the Senate, we would have to take some pretty red seats, while losing none. Our only hope is that damage is so bad that red Senate seats come into play, but the examples of Kansas and Louisiana are not encouraging, red state voters are loath to elect Democrats, even when republicans destroy their states.

(31,261 posts)Will likely get Gorsuch appointed by eliminating the 60 vote rule. Face it, we can't do anything until 2020 minimum, even then our options are limited. By the time we regain control, the Courts could be packed with rightwing extremist, with our only hope being violent overthrow - how many working stiffs will want that?

(4,187 posts)I pressed the button to speak with a staffer, and I actually spoke with a staffer! I explained my perspective and urged my Senator to oppose Gorsuch and demand that Trump renominate Merrick Garland.
I honestly didn't think they would take my call. I thought I would get an answering machine. It feels so good to have expressed my opinion.
I've read that you should call the person who represents your district (see https://www.callmycongress.com/NJ-12), and provide your name and address. Without that information, they assume you're not in their district and ignore your call.
