Right now RW Christians are feeling their power. They will not rest until they can force their beliefs on the rest of the country even though they are NOT the majority of Americans. We could end up like Iraq or any other Middle East country where sectarian viiolence reigns. Or we could end up like Ireland with the war between Protestants and Catholics. They have the mistaken belief that the rest of us will just roll over and accept their dictatorial and tyrannical take over.
Such strife can happen here. The RW Christian movement has a white supremacist master race flavor that Trump and the GOP are encouraging. Right now the GOP is proposing policies and legislation that is making Christianity official for all practical purposes. And they are relentless in their quest to suppress all dissent over their plans.
DeVos is the most obvious signal that Christians demand all of our schools be Christian. And they are not disguising their intentions any more. Every state controlled by the GOP really wants complete control over a woman's life where reproduction is concerned. I their world a woman's ONLY purpose is to have children and to be a slave to the husband and her church. There is NO other option for woman.
In that way the GOP and RW Christian churches are as bad as the terrorists who use Islam to control women.

(13,951 posts)Buy more guns now that repukes have had a price lowering effect on gun sales. More ammo and war related gear. They think peace loving liberals and "muzzies" will rise up and kill all christian loving societies in the US... I swear I think these guys really WANT a civil war... They are all angry for the sake of being angry and somebody or some thing...

(4,161 posts)As a non-Christian, I find these comments about America being a "Christian nation" absolutely appalling. Furthermore, the smarmy comments about there being a "war" either on Christmas or on Christianity is not only disingenuous but bogus and ridiculous.
And yes, the fundies insistence on everything being "non-denominational" is a goddamned lie. Their version of Christianity is always full of judgment, anger, and revenge and there is NOTHING "non-denominational" about it.

(6,258 posts)As a Christian, I'm appalled by their perversion of the words of Jesus. He hung out with sinners and Roman tax collectors and women. He said that it would be harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven that for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
I was taught (yay Methodists!) that there are many ways to be godly, and that Christianity is not the only way. That your deeds count a whole lot more than your words. That you should love your neighbor as you love yourself. That if you want to pray, you should go to a room in your home and pray quietly, not stand up in public and shout your prayers.
Those that believe in the judgmental God are not followers of Jesus -- they are followers of something called the prosperity gospel. They believe that the more money you have, the more God loves you! Argh! (Though that does explain a lot about the religious beliefs of Betsy DeVos and others.)

(16,438 posts)There are too many left wing Christians and they represent more of the establishment.
The split in christianity is between the evangelicals and the mainline Protestants*. The evangelical mvmt is growing and the rest are shrinking but the liberal churches are well established and have just as vocal members.
* - Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, Catholics, Episcopalians, Quaker, Reformed etc.

(841 posts)There is a feeling among some people that the Catholics and mainline Protestants are too liberal and not tough enough on defending "Western civilization" from Muslims and immigrants. I am Catholic and the right-wing Catholic Internet hates Pope Francis because they think he is too liberal and too easy on immigrants and they dislike his stances on climate change and economic justice.
Like you said, mainline Christians are seen as too "establishment." Things like the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church have not helped matters either. I think in 20 years the majority of American Christians will belong to virulent right-wing churches as the mainline churches shrink due to losing members to the right-wing churches or to secularism.

(36,598 posts)The repub Xtians tend to be judgmental & a lot of them are even mean. The dem Xtians come more from a place of kindness. There are also fewer of them. Not really. They just don't seem to feel the need to wear their religion like a badge. That's what I hate the most about these self righteous assholes is the display of their (false) piousness. Our government is thoroughly in their grip. I'm having a really hard time trying to maintain any kind of positive attitude in all of this.

(3,284 posts)The only real difference between Islamic fundies and Christian fundies is that the Christian ones haven't gained control of this countrys government yet. If they do, stoning and be-headings will not be out of the question for us. They already think it's OK to kill abortion Drs., some state wants to prosecute abortions as 1st degree murder. Not a lick of difference IMO.

(5,506 posts)The evangelicals have written a brand new version of Christianity that allows for extreme violance to show your love for god. They had to do this to get men, especially dumb ones, interested in church. The foundation is this: everyone is against you; you'll have to fight for your right to practice your faith; and most importantly, men are in charge. Women must be subservient to their husbands.
These people don't care if they are poor because they were going to be poor anyway.
The Republicans offer these people the chance to stay poor and offer them free reign to practice their religion.
I live in an area of Michigan were these people are abundant. Sadly, due to a family obligation I can't move.

(6,416 posts)...about the indoctrination of children in the fundie groups.
Long story short, home schooled, believe an average increase of one degree in the globe is not global warning, earth 6k years old, etc.
When one organizer was asked if they thought it was wrong to indoctrinate children at such a young age. The response was "well Muslim countries do the same and if were going to have a fighting chance, we need to do it as well"
In other words, they are preparing for war.
At a youth camp some were swapping ghost stories when a camp counselor came in and said "I think Jesus would prefer you talked about the Bible" ....and of course, that ended ghost stories and fun.
The good news, Fundies are not growing. They either remain stable some years or shrink in others. Then again, a cornered animal is more dangerous.
