President Dwight D. Eisenhower..."Chance for Peace Speech "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_for_Peace_speech
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron...

Sadly..when he left office in 1961...he gave another great speech about the "military industrial complex" and what it stands for...but that one is for another time...

(38,453 posts)Eisenhower is rarely if ever quoted. I guess most Republicans would not even know he said those words, and now most would say that is ..now anti-American...as you said.. Thank You for your ideas..

(5,914 posts)But that would mean he served in the military instead of seeking half a dozen deferments due to a cyst on his butt. So that can't be right.
Must have been a relative. There are a lot of Eisenhowers.

(5,914 posts)Like Michelle Obama said, the office doesn't change who you are, it REVEALS who you are.

(5,275 posts)The top marginal tax rate every year Ike was in office was 91 or 92%. That got adjusted to top rates from 60 something to 70 something percent till the B actor got in office, he slashed it way, way down.
Greed is wrecking our nation.

(13,929 posts)I believe I read where he got it thru so he could pay down the debt for WW 2.. Interesting with this "horrendous" tax on the rich it was one of the most prosperous for times for the American people. If the shit storm in Washington want's to make America Great Again, they don't have to re invent the wheel, just do what they did in the '50's...
