Donations pour to Trayvon Martin's killer
Source: CNN
The lawyer for the neighborhood watch leader who fatally shot unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, said Thursday that his client has received about $200,000 from supporters.
Orlando lawyer Mark O'Mara told CNN's "AC360" that George Zimmerman told him Wednesday of the donations as they were trying to shut down his Internet presence to avoid concerns about possible impersonators.
"He asked me what to do with his PayPal accounts and I asked him what he was talking about," O'Mara told Anderson Cooper. "And he said those were the accounts that had the money from the website he had. And there was about 200, $204,000 that had come in to date."
O'Mara had said earlier this month that he believed Zimmerman had no money. "I think he's indigent for costs," he said, adding that Zimmerman's relatives had few assets.

some of them were scary bad. The symantics, the specifics, the way the law was written, all the while not seeing the simple truth.
nice to know someone else was going to say it.

But criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos said (Judge) Lester might not react benignly. "I know a lot of judges who would remand the guy back into custody immediately," he said. "If you've got more money stashed in an account and you could just pay the bond and be gone, that gives a lot of judges concern."

Wonder if Zimmerman will be back in jail when the judge finds out?

(25,183 posts)and that would energize those who have already donated. They'd kick it up to whatever the judge was able to re-set.
Besides, I have to think that a lot of consideration was given to the fact that he obviously worked with a lawyer to work with the prosecutor to turn himself in. The amount of money he's been able to raise has no bearing on that.

(25,183 posts)I figured that there were those who would donate, and it seems that I was right. $204K is about $25 each from maybe 9,000 donors, after PayPal has taken its cut. That works out to less than 200 donors per state, and the less populous states might well have more donors than that.

(55,445 posts)I think that's where the bulk of the cash is coming from, since they believe this trial is an infringement of their constitutional right to shoot on sight any strange black men in their neighborhoods...
(Seriously--More Virginians probably think the constitution says that than we'd care to admit)

(11,065 posts)He went into the bail hearing pretending he was broke and just "happened" to tell his attorney about this financial windfall he had in his back pocket until after the hearing. Yeah, right. I also don't believe O'Mara didn't know about this money. Geez, the very first thing any attorney talks about with a client is the money. They got some 'splainin' to do to the judge.

(966 posts)basically it's to ensure the accused person will show up for trial, and/or isn't a threat to the community. I cant believe Zimmerman is patrolling any streets with his gun right now, and if he was going to run he had alot of time before he was arrested to go.
