Criminal complaint filed against bishop who called for gays to be killed
Source: Pink News
A criminal complaint has been filed against a Catholic bishop who said homosexuality should be punished with death.
Vitus Huonder, the Catholic bishop of Chur, eastern Switzerland, made the controversial comments at the Joy in Faith forum in the German city of Fulda.
At the forum, Huonder quoted a bible passage which states that homosexuals should be killed.
He read out Leviticus 20:13, which is sometimes quoted in opposition to gay rights. It reads: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
In the 50-minute address last Friday, he also took aim at gender theory, divorce, sex education and same-sex marriage. The 73-year-old added: Both of these passages alone suffice to clarify unambiguously the churchs position on homosexuality. He went on: There is no diversity when it comes to marriage and family models, although a book has just come out in my bishopric called Family Diversity. Even speaking of family diversity is an attack on the Creator.
Swiss LGBT organisation the Pink Cross has since filed a criminal complaint about the comments, after saying it was shocked by them.

(45,251 posts)The Bible threatens certain people with burning in hell. That doesn't mean that God is ordering me to try to make that happen. If God wants to make it happen, she can.
Besides, Huonder is either killing people himself, in which case he should be charged with murder forthwith, or he is a hypocrite. "Let's you and him try to kill each other and see who succeeds." is not in the bible, but it seems to be what he is really saying.
He is FOS and yeah, charge him.

(5,902 posts)The Pope, after all, is expected to glad-hand the curia non-stop.
On the other hand, as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010 Pope Francis was a vocal opponent of Argentina's Marriage Equality Law. Perhaps Francis has evolved on the issue; perhaps his opposition at the time was nothing more than lip service to Latin America's powerful Opus Dei lobby.
What we do know is that the Catholic right today is furious with Pope Francis. Always a good sign.

(36,827 posts)Why is it that when the pope does something or says something bad in respect to gay rights we are supposed to not read too much into it, but when he says something that kinda sounds different we must warp it completely out of context in order for it to sound positive?
RCS policies haven't changed. It's just they have found a supposedly kinder-gentler pope in order to soften their message which is still just as shitty as it ever was.

(1) According to the Catholic Church's own teachings the NT's emphasis on mercy, forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ has rendered such bigoted, homicidal OT ravings moot and void.
(2) If you're going to cite Leviticus as the template for modern lifestyle choices and lawful punishments you can't stop at one cherry-picked verse. You must accept ALL of "God's Law" as spelled out in that book. So:
(a) no drinking of alcohol in holy places (uh-oh . . .)
(b) mixing fabrics in clothing
(c) trimming your beard
(d) working on the Sabbath
(e) tearing your clothes
(f) failing to include salt in offerings to God
and on and on and on . . .
(3) The OT also says "children who curse their parents shall be put to death". (Sorry, "God-fearing" parents--grounding, revocation of allowances or privileges, even a slap across the face--not sufficiently murderous for, err . . . "God". Clearly, a Bronze Age desert tribe's harsh "moral" code is somewhat at odds with modern-day Western notions of jurisprudence.)
In short: this hate-monger's ravings are an embarrassment to himself, his church, and the god he claims to serve. Just another example of a bigot cherry-picking the Bible for select verses to wield as cudgels against people he finds incomprehensible and/or "other" and/or happily "out" while he burns and seethes in his own self-accusatory repression.
(You want a workable definition of hell? There's one for ya: A bitter mind and broken spirit at war with itself. Not saying this man is gay, mind you. Merely raising it as a possibility. Psychology has shown us that the more rabid and unhinged the homophobic rhetoric . . . )

TO THE GATHERED CROWD OF REPORTERS: Huonder: "When I said homosexuals should be killed and cited Leviticus to back up my bigotry, I meant 'gay people should be swaddled in mewling kittens and stroked with velvet gloves as they wander through the Vatican's archives of gay art, the largest in Europe.' Should have made that clearer. Sorry."
:::pause:::
INTO THE TELEPHONE: "My sincerest apologies, Pope Francis. I . . . yes . . . next flight to Rome, Your Holiness? . . . Well sure, I . . ."
